Decca
Two rock giants, one largely forgotten, rekindle a friendship and make music that ranks with their best. Producer T Bone Burnett delivers his most spectacular production in memory, filled with shining steel guitar, chortling brass and gospel-time choirs. Ultimately, it's Russell's voice that shines brightest, drawing on the entire history of American popular music in its canny, vulnerable, knowing croon.
UFV grads help Elton John show
Alberta Ballet show no tribute to Tiny Dancer
When UFV fashion design grads Corey Bond and Christina Dietterle talk about Elton John, they talk fashion statement, not music superstar.
For them, he conveys images of feathers, high heels, outrageous eyewear, and sequins -- not Billboard hits like Yellow Brick Road or Rocket Man.
When Bond and Dietterle heard about the Alberta Ballet's new production Love Lies Bleeding - inspired by the life and music of Elton John - they were interested. UFV fashion alumna Denise Gingrich was head of costumes for the show and famed designer Martine Bertrand was hired to design the costumes with the Banff Centre, whose mandate is to provide entry-level opportunities to students, said Gingrich.
"Due to the difficulty of the project, I wanted high-calibre work-study students so I contacted UFV's fashion and theatre teachers," said Gingrich.
Both Bond and Dietterle jumped at the chance and before long the pair was off to Banff where the costumes were being assembled.
"We worked at the Banff Centre for 10 weeks and it was such a great opportunity," says Bond of Abbotsford. "And now, having that experience is a really good thing to have on a resume. We made a lot of connections with people who work in the industry."
Love Lies Bleeding is a pop-ballet production that tells the story of an Elton fan who gets caught up in the world-wind pop culture while emanating his hero.
The contemporary semi-abstract ballet was set to 14 songs composed by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, had a full cast of dancers and actors and played in Calgary to sell-out crowds last May.
"Because there were so many costumes to be made, it was sort of like an assembly line," said Bond.
While both said some of the work was tedious, being under the tutelage of some of Canada's top costume designers was a unique opportunity.
"It was a really good glimpse into the industry," said Dietterle. "We had deadlines that were always moving, fittings that went late into the night, and there was weekend work the closer we got to the show and lots of extra hours. But the experience was so amazing."
Dietterle was thrilled to hear that Sir Elton John had approved the ballet and given the production his full blessing; so the show will go on and start traveling in 2011.
For both young grads, who weren't even born when Sir Elton was rocking in the 1970s, the experience has helped them appreciate his music.
"Since I worked on the Rocket Man costumes, that song now means a lot more to me than it did before," said Bond.
"But the best part of the whole experience was seeing our costumes on stage during the performance."

http://theglamlg.blogspot.com/2010/12/my-letter-to-elton-john.htmlMy Letter to Elton John
Dear Elton John,I think it's only appropriate for me to start out by saying I'm a huge fan of your music. There are some of your songs that I will never get tired of hearing.
Songs like "Teacher I need you", "Tiny Dancer", "Somone saved my life tonight", and "Daniel" are the kinda songs that people put on repeat.
But let's face the facts. You have never been very good at live performances. I'm not trying to diss. Maybe you get nervous. You're human too.
Back when your songs were number one hits it was your duty to preform live. I understand that.
But now? Seriously? You're coming to our new basketball arena? Ooooh. Please tell me it's not so!
It's still not too late to cancel the show. That way you could stay at home, maybe chill out with some of your 10 godchildren and WE will get to still listen to your music from when you could still sing and remain unscarred.
Just a thought.
Love,
Me
