Elton John concert biggest so far this year

By Nigel Benson on Tue, 1 Nov 2011

The Sir Elton John concert in Dunedin this month will be the largest concert staged in New Zealand so far this year.
Capital C: Concerts promoter Phil Sprey said a 35,000 capacity crowd was expected at the November 25 concert.
About 800 tickets still remained unsold yesterday in the licensed upper south stand ($275 each) and the premium platinum ($400 each) and diamond ($300 each) areas.
"With ticket sales having reached 34,000, the Elton John performance at Dunedin's new Forsyth Barr Stadium will be the country's biggest concert this year," Mr Sprey said yesterday.
"There's been no bigger concert in the country so far in 2011.
"Nothing even like those numbers. The Big Day Out gets up around 30,000 to 35,000, but that's over a whole day and a whole lot of bands; not just one concert," Mr Sprey said.
He conceded the record would last only weeks, with up to 55,000 people expected to attend the Foo Fighters concert in Western Springs in Auckland, on December 13.
Ticket sales slowed during the Rugby World Cup, but demand had surged since for what will be Sir Elton's first South Island concert for 20 years, he said, adding: "... this concert will also be the southern-most place he has ever performed in."
Sir Elton (64) will be backed by his long-time band, Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, Kim Bullard, Bob Birch and John Mahon, with support from the 2Cellos and New Zealand singer-songwriters Katie Thompson and Kara Gordon.
The set list will be a "best of his 40-year career", including hits Rocket Man, Candle in the Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Bennie and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, the Bitch is Back and Daniel.

It's official. Indonesia is now on the list of Elton John's Greatest Hits tour destinations. According to his official Web site, the English singer-songwriter will perform in Jakarta on Nov. 18 ― with a big ensemble in toe.

He will be performing with Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, Bob Birch, Kim Bullard and John Mahon at the Sentul International Convention Center. His four background singers Rose Stone (Sly and The Family Stone), Lisa Banks, Tata Vega and Jean Witherspoon, who have all accompanied him on his recent European and North American engagements, will also be on stage.

The show will also be enlivened by 2CELLOS, a cello duo made up of Croatian cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser.

Seems like the gig will be a monumental one. Tickets are priced from Rp 650,000 to Rp 12,000,000.

Since starting his musical career in 1964, the six-time Grammy winner has released 30 studio albums. His most iconic songs include “Candle in the Wind,” “Your Song,” and “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.”

John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, received a knighthood from HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, and was a recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor in 2004 and a Disney Legends Award in 2006 for his remarkable contribution to music.

His original song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from Disney's "The Lion King,” received the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1994.

Indonesia is the first Southeast Asian destination of John’s tour, before he continues on to Singapore and Malaysia.

Elton John concert protests come under fire

By Steven Patrick
The Daily Chilli
Wednesday, Oct 26, 2011
Don't Go Breaking our Hearts!
That's the rallying cry from various organisations to the Pahang PAS Youth, whose protests against Elton John's concert may just deprive Malaysians from watching the 64-year old legend in the country for the very first time.
The political party is protesting the concert, due to the singer's gay tendencies.
Local rock queen Ella said, "The whole thing is so unfair. What he does in private has nothing to with his career or his talent. It would be a shame for Malaysians to miss out on such a legendary artiste."
Datuk Freddie Fernandez, president of artiste association Karyawan, said, "These people (who are making the protest) should all go and live in a cave."
Fernandez believes this brings Malaysia back to the dark ages when people used to be burnt at the stake.
He continued, "Where's the freedom and what does the future hold for Malaysians if this continues? No one should discriminate against gay or lesbian people."
Fernandez added that John is a highly talented individual with over four decades of producing great music.
"His music is wholesome entertainment. People of all ages enjoy his music. He has even written songs for a Disney movie! The majority just wants to hear a legend perform live for the very first time in this country. They don't care about his private life," he said.
Harakah Daily reported its chairman Shahril Azman Abdul Halim Al-Hafiz as saying John's gay marriage would have a negative influence on the younger generation.
Norman Halim, chairman of the Recording Industry Association Of Malaysia said, "These are just a few narrow-minded people trying to impose their values on everybody. You don't go to an Elton John concert and suddenly become gay!"
Norman also said that these ridiculous protests should not happen if Malaysia wants to move to developed country status.
"There is a huge investment involved in bringing shows in to Malaysia. If this continues to happen, promoters would be reluctant to bring any foreign artistes in to the country," he says.
Voice of Women president Chew Hoong Ling, concurred and added that the protest was just a publicity stunt for PAS.
"It's also disrespectful to the gay community and human rights. One has a right to choose his or her own way of life. This is a political party that have tried to do the same thing before with the Adam Lambert concert," she added.
Back in October, Lambert performed to a full-house at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil , despite a PAS demonstration outside the venue itself.
Chew said the arts and sports are a uniting factor and should not be politicised.
MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Kerr said, "PAS should stop bullying or intimidating Malaysians who have no issues over John's concert."
Elton John, who was written classics like Your Song, Candle in the Wind and Don't Go Breaking My Heart, married David Furnish in 2005 when same-sex marriages were legalised in Britain.
The show, which will be held in Genting Highlands on Nov 22, is part of the music icon's Greatest Hits Tour.
