Elton John’s cousin ,Roy Dwight interviewed by Geraldo Rivera

An interview of Roy Dwight cousin of Elton John , I’m guessing late 80s, on a show called “now it can be told”

    Roy Dwight: Football Career

Roy Dwight began his professional career at Fulham FC in 1954, where he quickly stood out as a prolific striker, scoring 54 goals in 72 appearances. In 1958, he transferred to Nottingham Forest, where he continued to impress with his on-field performance.

His most memorable moment came in the 1959 FA Cup Final, held on May 2 at Wembley Stadium. Roy scored the first goal of the match in the 10th minute, contributing to Nottingham Forest's 2-1 victory over Luton Town. Unfortunately, at the 33rd minute, he suffered a broken leg after a tough tackle and was taken off the field. This incident marked a turning point in the match and significantly impacted his future career.

After recovering, Roy had stints with clubs like Coventry City, Millwall, and Gravesend & Northfleet. In 1968, he had a brief coaching experience in the United States with the Detroit Cougars. He later returned to England, where he shifted his focus to education, becoming a physical education teacher at secondary schools.

Personal Life and Relationship with Elton John

Roy Dwight was born on January 9, 1933, in Belvedere, Kent, England. He was the son of Edwin Dwight and Ellen Shirley. For many years, he was incorrectly described as Elton John's "uncle" (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight), but Roy himself clarified that he was actually the cousin of the music legend, correcting a long-standing confusion present in various publications.

In 1954, Roy married Constance M. Carver in Dartford. The couple had at least one son, Grant Dwight. A notable and lesser-known fact is that Elton John made his first public performance at Roy and Constance's wedding, playing piano for the guests while the hired band was delayed.

Roy passed away on April 9, 2002, at the age of 69, in Woolwich, London. Until the end of his life, he remained involved with sports and education, being fondly remembered by former students and Nottingham Forest supporters.
