Remembering Ryan White – Ryan's mother speaks about HIV/AID Awareness (Video)
http://www.examiner.com/x-On Friday, Jeanne White-Ginder, Ryan White’s mother, is one of three speakers participating in "AIDS Education: 20 Years After Ryan White," a commemorative event at IU Bloomington that both honors Ryan White's influence on AIDS/HIV education and anti-discrimination efforts and offers an update on other such efforts in the U.S.
“I'm so excited that IU is doing this," said Jeanne White Ginder, Ryan White's mother. "Ryan was hoping so much to go to IU, and now he will be an everlasting part of the university."
Indiana University's Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation have established the Ryan White Legacy Scholarship in honor of Ryan White, the rural Indiana 13-year-old who contracted HIV through tainted blood products given for his hemophilia. (insideindianabusiness)
Ryan wanted to be a typical 13 yr. old boy. He wanted to ride a bike, have friends and play outside. He wanted to be able to go to school most of all. He was barred in 1985 from Western Middle School near Kokomo school due to the ignorance of the time and the way of thinking.
He was spit on and called names. Barred from public school. Shunned by former classmates and teachers. On more than one occasion, the family's home near Kokomo Indiana was the target of gunshots. Communities drained swimming pools. Grocers tossed out produce. Anything or anyone that might come in contact with a person who had this deadly disease known by the strange acronym -- AIDS -- was feared to be potentially contaminated.
Compassion and understanding often gave way to terror and scorn, in great part because AIDS was most closely associated with gay sex and IV drug use. Some even saw it as a punishment from God.
"There was a stereotype of HIV victims at the time, that they were evil incarnate," said former Indiana Health Commissioner Dr. Woodrow "Woody" Myers. "Ryan showed that was not the case." (Indystar.com)
But there was another side to Ryan's story -- an almost magical counter to the hatred and turmoil. Celebrities such as Elton John, Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson came to his aid. They still keep in touch with his mother supporting her advocacy in the field. Elton John will preform at the Indianapolis Childrens Museum. A Ryan White Benefit will be held April 28 at Clowes Hall. to honor the 20th Anniversay. Proceeds will be used for The Children's Museum's "Power of Children" exhibit and the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Tickets are on sale now.(AP)
Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act (Ryan White Care Act, Ryan White.
Enacted August 18, 1990) was an Act of the U.S. Congress named in honor of Ryan White, an Indiana teenager who contracted AIDS through a tainted hemophilia treatment in 1984, and was expelled from school because of the disease. White became a well-known advocate for AIDS research and awareness, until his death on April 8, 1990. It has been called America's most important step in fighting the AIDS epidemic, helping thousands annually.
The act is the United States's largest federally funded program for people living with HIV/AIDS. The act sought funding to improve availability of care for low-income, uninsured and under-insured victims of AIDS and their families. Unlike Medicare or Medicaid, Ryan White programs are "payer of last resort," which fund treatment when no other resources are available. As AIDS has spread, the funding of the program has increased. In 1991, the first year funds were appropriated, around $220 million were spent; by the early 2000s, this number had almost increased 10-fold. (aidsabout.com)
In 2009, Congress passed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act which was signed by President Obama on October 30, 2009. This bill extends the Ryan White Care Act for an additional four years. This young man was such a pioneer and gentle soul...an old soul that did so much in his short time here for so many. Peace

Elton John taking Simon Cowell gig still “Idol” chatter
http://www.gossipcop.com/Only successful films should have sequels, not failed rumors.
Returning this week, however, is the rumor that “Elton John is the hot favorite to replace Simon Cowell as a judge on ’American Idol,’” reports Showbiz Spy in a piece similarly titled, “Elton John Poised to Replace Simon Cowell on American Idol.”
According to the site, John, a guest judge on Season Three, is “the perfect candidate” to sit at the judges’ table alongside Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and Ellen DeGeneres because “Elton is funny, knows what he is talking about and won’t suffer any fools.”
This rumor first appeared four months ago, and at the time a rep for John told Gossip Cop, “He is not going to be a judge.”
Nothing seems to have changed.
A source close to John wondered rhetorically, “When would he even have the time for it?”
Hmm… Let’s see…
A week from… never?

Singer Elton John announced a Tucson date on his upcoming summer tour this week. Tickets for his July 21 concert at the Tucson Convention Center go on sale Friday at 10 a.m., and are expected to sell out quickly.
John has returned to his roots, blessedly, and will be playing his 70s classics on the "Rocket Man: Greatest Hits Live" tour. He will also be joined by a full band, unlike his last Tucson performance in 2000, in which he accompanied himself on piano.
Along with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, John wrote some of the greatest songs of his era, including "Daniel," "Tiny Dancer," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Crocodile Rock" and the stunning "Rocket Man." Later, less stunning career hits include "I'm Still Standing" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues."
The singer is 63, so the highest notes on some compositions will have to be rearranged. That said, his recent appearance at the 2010 Grammy awards and a rainforest benefit with Lady GaGa proved that John has stayed hip and relevant over the years. And he still rocks the comical eyewear from time to time, too.
Tickets will be available Friday through ticketmaster.com, at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or at the Tucson Convention Center ticket office at 260 S. Church Ave. There is a six-ticket limit per customer, and there is likely to be a ticket lottery. Prices range from $39-$139.

Today Marks 20th Anniversary Of Ryan White's Death
http://wcsi.whiterivernews.Today marks 20 years since a Hoosier boy died from AIDS. Ryan White's mother Jeanne White Ginder says she still receives threats from people who do not understand her teen son's public battle to be allowed to go to public school despite having the disease.
An exhibit is on display at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis about White's battle and efforts to get people to understand the plight of those with AIDS. Elton John will attend an April 28th fundraiser at Butler University to raise money for both a Children's Museum exhibit and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Sarah McLachlan will soon get the Alberta Ballet treatment.
The dance company announced yesterday it is collaborating with the famed Canadian singer on an original work based on her music as part of its 2010-11 season.
Alberta Ballet artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre has already successfully set ballet to the music of Joni Mitchell in the acclaimed Fiddle and the Drum. And more recently, Maitre used the songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin for the show, Love Lies Bleeding, which will have its world premiere in Calgary May 6 to 9.
About 40 McLachlan tunes will be used.

McLachlan inspires new work at Alberta Ballet
Last Updated: Wednesday, April 7, 2010 | 6:33 PM ET
Sarah McLachlan, shown performing in West Vancouver, B.C., on Sept. 12, 2009, will collaborate with Alberta Ballet on new dance. (Darryl Dyck/Canadian Press) Sarah McLachlan is set to collaborate with the Alberta Ballet on a new work based on her music.
Alberta Ballet artistic director Jean Grand-Maître — who has created successful works based on the music of Joni Mitchell and Elton John — said his collaboration with McLachlan will include music from her new album, The Laws of Illusion, to be released in June.
"I've picked 40 songs that really inspired me that I find very danceable," Grand-Maître told CBC News.
"And her new album is coming out — first in seven years. I've asked her if we can use it. She said absolutely."
McLachlan, who trained as a classical pianist, has worked with symphony orchestras across Canada and will have a hand in crafting her music for dance. In addition to releasing her album, McLachlan has also resurrected the Lilith Fair tour featuring female performers.
Grand-Maître created the popular ballet Fiddle and the Drum, based on the music of Joni Mitchell and his Love Lies Bleeding, based on the music of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, is to premiere in May in Calgary.
The McLachlan ballet project was announced Wednesday in Calgary, as the Alberta Ballet revealed details of its upcoming season.
The season marks the Canadian premiere of Kirk Peterson's The Sleeping Beauty, with sets and costumes designed for London's Royal Ballet. Peterson is the new associate artistic director at the Alberta Ballet.
Grand-Maître also plans an ambitious new telling of The Nutcracker by Edmund Stripe. The production, described as the most lavish Alberta Ballet has ever mounted, will tour to Ottawa and Vancouver, as well as Edmonton and Calgary.
There will be guest performances by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens from Montreal and by Pilobolus Dance Theatre of the U.S.

Elton John Headlines Charity Concert Celebrating Life Of Teen
http://perezhilton.com/2010-Filed under: Inspiration > Elton John
In order to celebrate the live of tragic AIDS victim Ryan White, Elton John will headline a charity concert at Butler University in Indiana.
Ryan got the disease from a contaminated blood transfusion in 1990 and he died at just 18-years-old. Elton held a bedside vigil for him in the last week of his life and even credited the teen for getting the singer back on track.
John said:
"Every time I stopped taking drugs, after a period of time I'd go back. It got worse and worse… What finally opened my eyes was Ryan White. All proceeds from the April 28th concert will be given to the Indianapolis Children's Museum and Elton John's AIDS foundation.
I read in a magazine that Ryan was not allowed to go to school because he had AIDS. Firebombs were being put in his family's letter box. I was enraged. I helped the White family move. I spent the last week of Ryan's life in 1990 with him in an Indianapolis hospital.
There was something wonderful in this family - they were losing their son, yet they were still able to forgive the hatred of others. I thought, 'Look at me. I have everything I want, and I complain about a hotel room because I don't like the wallpaper? What happened to me? I was a nice, decent boy, and now I'm a self-obsessed drug addict.' So I got sober."
