Elton John's Duluth concert sells out in minutes, leaving many disappointed fans
http://www.twincities.com/music/ci_17392598?nclick_check=1Updated: 02/15/2011 11:34:20 AM CST
They begin arriving Sunday afternoon, Elton John fans getting in line at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center to buy tickets when they went on sale at 10 a.m. Monday. By that time, there were about 400 people waiting.
Most went away disappointed, victims of high demand, high technology and a balky credit card system.
"The lines were really slow," said Jeanne Carroll, who arrived with a friend around 8:15 a.m. to stand in line for tickets. They went away empty-handed.
"Disappointed? Yes. End of the world? No," she said.
The 7,500-seat Amsoil Arena sold out the May 6 concert in minutes, DECC Executive Director Dan Russell said. Only 300 tickets were sold at the DECC; most of the remainder were sold online.
"There was incredible demand," Russell said. "We probably could have sold out two shows."
Unfortunately for Elton John fans on a budget, much of the demand came from websites that buy tickets and sell them much higher than their original price. The face value of the DECC tickets for John's concert ranged from $29 to $129. Monday evening, the ticket-selling website Hardline Tickets had tickets from $184 to $613; StubHub had tickets from $120 to $499.
"It's disgusting, but the state of Minnesota legalized scalping tickets a few years ago," Russell said.
To limit the impact of such sites, many performance venues limit the number of tickets that may be purchased at a time. There was a six-ticket limit for Elton John's DECC concert. But that
"This doesn't happen to us a lot, but obviously these sites are following Elton John and realized the demand is going to be there," Russell said. "It is a shame, but so far the industry hasn't been able to stop it. As long it is legal, you have a ticket limit and they buy the tickets, there really isn't much the concert industry can do."
Adding to the frustration of fans at the DECC was a slow credit card system. DECC workers resorted to taking people's phone and credit card numbers. And one window switched to cash-only.
"It was horrible," said Anne Roe — 29th in line with a credit card and not enough cash. "There were tickets being bought right in front of our eyes and we know there are limited tickets. We were watching our four hours of waiting go down the drain. People were mad."
Roe got the two tickets she needed, but only because a man in line with her reached Ticketmaster on his phone while waiting.
"I was able to get my tickets over the phone," Roe said. "As for the DECC, next time I will just stay home and buy online."
But Monday was a happy Valentine's Day for at least one Duluth couple.
Pat Valentine (yes, that's his actual name) of Duluth came at 2 p.m. Sunday to be the first in line to get tickets for himself, his wife and mother-in-law.
"I wanted to get good tickets for it, beat the crowd and be first in line," he said Monday before tickets went on sale.
"If this is any indication of the type of concert that the Amsoil Arena is going to book, the people in this area will have the opportunity to enjoy some high-quality concerts in the future," he said.
Reached by phone later, Valentine's wife, Mary, said he bought tickets third-row center.
"He's very happy, and so am I," she said.
Beckhams, Kanye West, Elton John Invited To Royal Wedding As Sarah Ferguson Is Snubbed

The Obamas may be staying in Washington, but Royal Watchers Stateside will be pleased to learn that a host of big-name celebs will be in the house — Or should we say “In The Abbey?” — when Wills and Kate tie the knot in 67 days.
The royal couple – who are set to wed on April 29 – will see 1,900 UK politicians, foreign dignitaries and a host of celebrity guests, including David and Victoria Beckham, Kanye West, and Elton John attend their upcoming nuptials at Westminster Abbey in London. Elton, of course, was a dear friend of the prince’s late mother, Princess Diana. David, on the other hand, grew close to William last summer, when the pair led the campaign to bring the World Cup tournament to London in 2018. Fashionista Victoria Beckham is helping the bride-to-be learn to dress like a princess. The designer was asked to send some pieces from her collection to Middleton, 29.
“Apparently, she likes my clothes and has asked to see a selection,” Victoria, 36, told The Daily Telegraph at her New York Fashion Week show last week.
A high-profile omission from the list? William’s aunt Sarah Ferguson. Prince Andrew’s ex-wife and the mother of William’s cousins, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, has not been invited, according to her rep. The Original Fergie has been on the outs with the rest of The Royals ever since she was caught selling access to Andrew to an undercover reporter as part of a newspaper sting last fall.
Besides family and friends, guests will include more than 200 members of the government, Parliament and diplomatic corps; 60 governors-general and prime ministers from Commonwealth countries; about 80 representatives from various charities favored by the bride and groom; 30 members of the armed forces; and representatives from the church and other faiths, The BBC reports.
