A relação entre Elton John com a família real vem desde os tempos da Princesa Diana, vale lembrar que o cantor compôs a canção "Candle in the Wind" em homenagem à amiga, morta em 1997. Durante entrevista ao programa de Barbara Walters, ele falou sobre as semelhanças entre Diana e Kate Middleton.

"Kate tem uma personalidade muito parecida com a de Diana. Ela é muito discreta e muito bonita. Eles [Kate e William] estão juntos há muito tempo e eu acho que ela tem segurado toda essa pressão muito bem", opinou Elton que é um dos convidados para o casamento que irá acontecer no dia 29 de abril.

Elton também confessou que ficou surpreso ao saber que William deu à Kate o anel de noivado que Charles deu à Diana. "Eu sei que isso não é da minha conta, mas eu achei um pouco estranho", contou. --

Nova York é palco mais uma vez, entre 20 de abril e 1° de maio, do Festival de Filmes de Tribeca. O evento foi inaugurado com a projeção do documentário de Cameron Crowe "The Union" e um show do britânico Elton John, protagonista do filme. O festival, que chega à sua 10ª edição, foi idealizado pelo ator norte-americano Robert De Niro após os atentados terroristas de 11 de setembro de 2001. O projeto inicial do ator – que preside o Festival de Cinema de Cannes esse ano – era revitalizar a região sul da ilha de Manhattan, fragilizada pela destruição das torres gêmeas do World Trade Center. After decades of playing to packed arenas all over the world, you would think that Elton John would have gotten over pre-show nerves by now. But when 'The Union,' the Cameron Crowe-directed film documenting the making of John and Leon Russell's album, premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival Opening Night in New York City on Wednesday, the legendary artist admitted to feeling the butterflies.

"It's a huge honor for us," John told Spinner. "I haven't seen it so it's going to be nerve-wracking, but it's the biggest honor you could possible get."

With over 30 albums, recorded collaborations and soundtracks, it makes you wonder how he still has that music-making spark in him. Instead of the past, John admits to looking at current musicians for inspiration. "I love to be creative," he revealed. "I love writing new things. If you ever lose that spark, I listen to a lot of new music. I get inspired by new people and they give me the energy to keep going."

While Russell and Crowe weren't able to make it to last night's screening, producer T Bone Burnett and John's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin were both on hand to share the moment. The audience was also treated to the famed PS 22 Choir teaming up with the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson of in an energized pre-movie performance of 'Walk Like an Egyptian.'

The highlight of the evening, however, was John's performance after the film. With a set that began with 'Tiny Dancer' -- quite fitting, considering it was featured in Crowe's 'Almost Famous' -- he had to avoid the high notes, a problem he blamed on the dropping temperature. "I'm just about defrosting, so excuse me if I play or sing a few wrong notes," he said before singing 'Rocket Man.'

John's six-song set also included 'I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues' as well as 'Gone to Shiloh' and 'Never Too Old (To Hold Somebody)' from 'The Union.' He ended his performance with 'Your Song' and dedicated it to the city he loves so much.

"Thank you, New York," he told the crowd. "You know how much I love this place -- even though I'm frozen here like a lollipop. This is my song for you, with love."

Elton John's fingers froze up midway through an outdoor performance following a screening of The Union last evening, the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival. "Please excuse any wrong notes," he said to the crowd. "My hands are like ice!"
Along with such classics such as "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," and "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," John played two songs from The Union album – "Gone to Shiloh" and "Never Too Old (To Hold Somebody)" – for an audience that had just been schooled in how he wrote and recorded those songs with his longtime idol, Leon Russell. Directed by Cameron Crowe and narrated by John, the documentary chronicles the making of the album, and was shot mostly during recording sessions with producer T-Bone Burnett in Los Angeles and at a subsequent concert in New York (look in the audience for a cameo by a comedian who might be the film's biggest fan).

"Whoopi Goldberg waved the flag for us," John told Rolling Stone. "She's the one who sent in the film [to the festival]. This was a project we were just filming because we wanted it for ourselves."
Originally, John wanted Crowe to join him in Africa on safari and shoot him writing a few songs. But while on that safari, John listened to some of Russell's older music, which inspired him to seek out and collaborate with the Seventies star. Once Russell agreed, John got Crowe to join him in Los Angeles instead to shoot in the studio, starting with the first day of writing.
In a phone interview, Crowe told Rolling Stone that the documentary started out as "just a hobby project, a labor of love. What was going to be one day of shooting turned into another day into another week into a year."

As the film progresses, Russell has to take a break from recording for emergency brain surgery, and comes back weakened. He slowly recovers, as John showers him with love and energy. "When Elton John went to high-five Leon Russell – and he said, 'I don't know how to do that. Is that a sports thing?' – it doesn't get much better than that!" said director David O. Russell after the premiere. "That guy's the real deal."
Other musicians – from Stevie Nicks in rare fangirl mode to a detached Brian Wilson – come by to pay their respects to Russell and contribute to the sessions, with John happily taking a back seat. The sudden onslaught of guests and admirers seems to rouse Russell, who then writes "In the Hands of Angels," a song about his recovery that moves John to tears. "That scene was beautiful," actor Paul Dano told Rolling Stone after the screening. "That was magic."
"As the story grew and Leon came out of his shell, I knew we had something special," John said. "And now he's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he's touring in Australia, and he's going to earn a million dollars."

Because of that Australia tour, though, Russell was not able to attend the premiere. Nor was Crowe, who's shooting a film called We Bought A Zoo in Los Angeles. Both sent video greetings to the audience, however. Sporting a monkey on his shoulder, Crowe corralled his Zoo cast and crew, including Matt Damon, to take part in his.
Like many of the films at the festival, The Union is up for acquisition. "Everything up until now has just been about getting it ready to show, and anything beyond that, of a life beyond Tribeca, is a dream we can now realize," said Crowe. "Now that people have seen it, we're starting to figure it out."

A tender tribute from Elton John to one of his key influences, Leon Russell, and from filmmaker Cameron Crowe to both mu

NEW YORK – At the end of Cameron Crowe’s moving and eloquently simple documentary, The Union, Elton John sings “You’re never too old to hold somebody.” That lyric is entirely appropriate for a film that is one warm, extended embrace from the music legend to his idol, Leon Russell.
This chronicle of the making of John and Russell’s 2010 Universal album of the same name is also a valentine from a filmmaker for whom music has always been an indispensable element of his movies. Reinforcing that connection, John began his live performance following the Tribeca Film Festival’s opening-night screening with “Tiny Dancer,” a song used to stirring effect in Crowe’s 2000 feature, Almost Famous.
The most visible directorial touch here is the split-screen employed to show the two musicians on opposite sides of a studio, or to juxtapose present-day images of them with their 1970s high style. Otherwise, Crowe’s work is anything but intrusive. You get the sense he counts himself lucky just to be in the same room while these guys work. That congenial tone might make The Union a little reverential for non-fans, but it should find an eager audience of devotees on TV and DVD.

John toured with Russell back in the ‘70s, but the two had not seen each other in 38 years when they met again in Los Angeles to begin work on the album. John conceived the project as a tribute to a piano man and songwriter who was a major influence on him; his aim was to recapture the sound of Russell’s vintage releases.
Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the result was listed by Rolling Stone among the top five albums of last year. It merges the expansive flavors of Russell’s music -- combining rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, soul, blues, country – with enveloping narratives and soaring sounds that evoke the golden years of John’s songwriting collaboration with Bernie Taupin, another contributor to this album.
A 2011 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Russell had drifted into semi-obscurity before the album was made. At times he shows the watchful timidity of a hermit lured back into society. When John attempts to high-five him soon after their reunion, he says, “I don’t know how to do that. That’s some kind of sports thing, isn’t it?” There’s also a dry, self-effacing quality to his humor, and a notable lack of ego.
While his outfits might be less outré, Russell hasn’t significantly altered his look in the four decades since he was heading Joe Cocker’s band on the “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” tour. But while his curtain of hair, epic beard, spectacles and occasional top hat back then gave him the air of an intimidating hippie wizard, he’s now a more benign, white-maned figure, accurately described by John as looking like God.
Both artists purveyed different brands of flamboyance back in their hey-days, illustrated by some fun archival footage. Seeing John in his red hot pants or Donald Duck costume never gets old. Crowe provides a brisk account of the incredible sweep of Russell’s influence in a montage of hit songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s on which he played as a session musician.
While there’s no attempt to create artificial tension in what’s basically a love letter, the film acknowledges an interruption in the creative process as Russell underwent emergency brain surgery. His gradual recovery appears to be fueled by the music, peaking when some soulful backup singers enter the studio and start shoop-shooping, which has Russell stroking his beard with pleasure.
The tenderness John shows his collaborator is clearly genuine. Watching him overcome by emotion as Russell, not long out of hospital, sits at the piano and performs the gravelly hymn “In the Hands of Angels” for the first time, John seems less a music giant than a man acknowledging an enormous debt of gratitude.
Famous faces stop by during the writing and recording process: Booker T. Jones plays on one track, Brian Wilson sings harmonies, Stevie Nicks drops in and recalls opening for Russell with Lindsey Buckingham a few years before they formed Fleetwood Mac. But the film is above all a gesture from one musician to another, a heartfelt testament to the rewards of collaboration, and for John, an act of humble fandom.
The Union is dedicated to Reginald Dwight and Claude Russell Bridges, the birth names of its two subjects. That choice is fitting for a portrait that looks beyond the fame of either artist to provide intimate access to them as they return to their roots.

Ten years on, the Tribeca Film Festival is going on as strong — and as unpredictable — as ever. Last spring, the fest kicked things off in midtown Manhattan with the premiere of "Shrek Forever After." This time around, Tribeca returned to its roots, settling into the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (just steps from Ground Zero) for the debut of "The Union," Cameron Crowe's documentary about the Grammy-nominated musical collaboration between Elton John and Leon Russell.

"We can't believe our luck," Elton told MTV News Wednesday on the red carpet as paparazzi flashbulbs popped around him.
Joining the music legend on the carpet were Martin Scorsese, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Anna Kendrick, Rainn Wilson, Denis Leary, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Zoe Kravitz, ?uestlove, David O. Russell and others. Elton himself confessed he was initially nervous to invite Crowe's cameras into the recording studio, but was very happy with the results and the opportunity to debut the film in New York.
"I've never had a song filmed when I'm writing it, but Cameron's such a friend, I trusted him," he told us. "New York City is my favorite place to play. I've played 62 shows at Madison Square Garden, I've played at Radio City, Central Park, Shea Stadium, Fillmore East. It's been a very important city in my musical career and probably the most exciting city in the world."
"The Union," then, provides a singular window into Elton's artistic process, and folks like ?uestlove couldn't wait to see what it was all about. "The '70s icons that we worship, they came before the information age," the Roots drummer told us. "Now, you can watch Kanye make beats, but I would love to see how Elton collaborates. Who does the music, who does the lyrics, how that all works out."
And as the celebs glided down the red carpet on their way inside the theater, many couldn't help but marvel at how the festival, born in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, continues to thrive a decade later. "People forget that after 9/11, this neighborhood was devastated," Denis Leary told us. "People were afraid to come down and some people were moving out. [Robert] De Niro and [festival co-founder] Jane Rosenthal brought people back down. They brought culture back down and real spirit, which is much to their credit."

This show will be a bit of a drive – and surprisingly short notice – but Elton John will perform at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City on May 3. It was one year ago this week (April 16, 2010) that Sir Elton played a show at Wells Fargo Arena.
The show is a part of his “Greatest Hits Live” tour, so expect to hear “Bennie and the Jets,” “Rocket Man,” “Daniel,” “Your Song” and his many other hits. Performing with John will be his band, which includes Davey Johnstone (guitar), Bob Birch (bass), John Mahon (percussion), Nigel Olsson (drums) and Km Bullard (keyboard).
John will also be playing songs from his 2011 album “The Union,” recorded with Leon Russell. Sadly, Russell isn’t part of this tour.
Tickets are $79 and $129 each and go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday through ticketmaster. Check out photos from John’s 2010 Des Moines stop here.

He scored last week with his 2007 compilation Rocket Man: Number Ones. He had previously headed the list with his 1974 blockbuster Greatest Hits. The Beatles topped the catalog chart with their 1973 album The Beatles/1967-1970 and their 2000 compilation 1. Eagles led the list with their 1976 compilation Eagles/Their Greatest Hits: 1971-1975 and their 2003 release The Very Best Of. Michael Jackson scored with his 2003 album Number Ones and his 2005 album The Essential Michael Jackson. Elton is unique in that both of his aforementioned greatest hits albums are single-disk compilations. In these three other cases, one is a single-disk and one is a double-disk. So how do you get to #1 on the catalog chart with two different greatest hits albums? As you can see, it helps to be among the biggest recording acts of all time.

I guess last week Adele tied his record for the most consecutive weeks at no. 1 as a solo act in the British album charts (not including soundtracks). Since it´s re-entry there sometime in October 2010 it has been listet in the Canadian Top 100 almost constantly. Now it´s tracked with 14weeks. According to my chronicles the album´s first week on that chart was in the spring of 2007 and back then it peaked on #8. In 2007 it had been 12 weeks in the Top 100 alone. So I don´t think that they use correct information for the current charts.

The usual problems with the BPI. Nothing certified pre-1973. Many 70's and 80's releases not updated. Best example is Greatest Hits last certified in 1975. More recent releases do seem more up to date. Hope to add some actual sales info from 1984 onwards to this post soon. I couldn't find a certification for The Lion King which is strange. One further certification is the Pickwick album - Elton Live - a double album comprising 17-11-70 with Here and There. Released in 1978, it was certified in 1979 with a shipment of 120,000. So, a total of shipment in this way if it is not real or realistic(due also to most 70's and 80's album not certified) and has no sense, in my opinion. Second point: i think that BILLY JOEL certifications have a contrary problem than elton's. They are too big (see for example sales for Greatest Hits I&II) seeing the soundscan figures. I can clearly see that they are not realistic, probably a move from the record company.

Of course many of Elton's albums have sold more than their "shipment" figure. We don't have anything better. Billy Joel's shipments are not too big - they are audited like anyone else's. Go to http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21747&start=0 This covers US shipments and accounts for these extra sales - say a Gold album actually selling 800 or 900k. You will see there that the Billy Joel Greatest Hits has shipped 10,500,000.

In that time in most of the countries the certificatios didn't exist. For example : Crocodile rock was the soldest single in 1973 in Italy but I don't know how much it sold.

Could be the failed "Digital Compact Cassette" version. Could also be a Gold CD version on the DCC label. This label licensed classic albums and produced them in Gold Plated CD versions at about double the price of a normal CD. They were mastered by Steve Hoffman - one of the best ever for transfering analogue tapes to digital. If you see "remastered by Steve Hoffman" on a CD it's a good bet he got the best possible sound out of the source tapes available. A number of Elton's titles came out on Gold Plated CD's in the US including Goodbye Yellowbrick Road (1989) Honky Chateau (1990) Madman Across the Water (1989) Tumbleweed Connection (1991) They are now collectable because of their low sales and because the mastering was different to the regular CD's. Another item I've also remembered from Elton's catalogue is that Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was issued on CD in 1984 as a 2CD set. Then in 1992 it was issued on just one CD. The Gold CD in 1989 was also a one CD version.

MONTREAL - Four months after the birth of their son, Elton John, 63, and partner David Furnish, 48, sit down for an exclusive interview on A Barbara Walters Exclusive: Elton John and David Furnish (ABC, 10 p.m.).
ABC has said the music legend would explain the decision to keep baby Zachary a secret until after his birth, and how fatherhood has changed the couple. And, yes, you’re likely to catch at least a glimpse of the adorable infant.
John and Furnish have mostly been keeping quiet since Zachary was born on Christmas Day, though the new family did appear on the cover of Us Weekly in mid-January.
“I’ve never felt anything like it in my life,” John said in the Us Weekly interview. “You’re so awestruck. What can you say? You take it in. The feeling, the joy, the warmth of his body, his breathing. … I will never forget that experience, ever.”
The real question is whether Walters will ask John and Furnish about Lev, the young Ukrainian boy they tried to adopt in 2009, and his HIV-positive brother, Artyom. Although the adoption ultimately fell through, John vowed to do all he could to help the brothers. However, after Zachary’s birth, Lev and Artyom’s grandmother claimed the singer had forgotten about the two children.
“‘I have not given up hope that Elton will fulfil his promise to help Lev and Artyom, but now he has his new American baby, I doubt we will ever hear from him,” 57-year-old Yulia Ageyeva said in January.
In response, John’s spokesperson said: “‘If you look through the cuttings, you can see that Sir Elton has said he’s financially supporting them.”
Walters adopted her daughter, Jacqueline, in 1968, with her second husband, Lee Guber. After running away from home at age 15 and hitchhiking across the Southwest U.S., Jacqueline went on to found the charity New Horizons, a wilderness program for young women.
On Smallville (The CW, 8 p.m.), Clark and Lois are baffled by the appearance of a new superhero who’s more concerned with becoming famous than with saving the world.
Country fans are in for a treat as CBS presents Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country (CBS, 9 p.m.), featuring performances by Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire.

U2 tops the Hot Tours rankings with over $60 million in ticket sales from three venues on the South American leg of the band's ongoing worldwide tour. The 360° Tour that began in June 2009 made its only trek to the continent during March and April, playing markets in three countries. Noteworthy among those performances was the final stop of that leg as the band posted the third-highest gross ever reported to Billboard: a total of $32.7 million from 269,491 tickets sold in São Paulo, Brazil at Estádio do Morumbi on April 9-10 and 13. Only Bruce Springsteen's $38.6 million from 10 shows at Giants Stadium in 2003 and the Spice Girls $33.8 million from 17 shows at London's O2 Arena in 2007-08 have historically grossed more.

The band's first South America performance was in Chile at Santiago's Estadio Nacional on March 25. With a crowd of 77,765, U2 broke their own attendance record at the stadium, filling 420 more seats than they did in Feb. 2006 during the Vertigo Tour. Next on the itinerary was Argentina with shows on March 30, April 1 and 2 in Buenos Aires at Estadio Único Ciudad de La Plata. The 53,000-seat soccer stadium was filled to capacity for all three nights with an attendance total of 172,029 and grosses topping $20.5 million US$ (83.2 million pesos).

Elton John ranks No. 2 this week with sold out performances reported in two U.S. markets, part of a string of North American dates booked through mid-May.  New York's Madison Square Garden hosted the veteran entertainer on March 16 and 20 with a total of 36,338 tickets sold for both nights. A single performance on April 8 at the Spokane (Wash.) Arena drew a sellout crowd of 11,604 with box office grosses topping the $1 million mark. Sir Elton wraps his U.S./Canada trek on May 14 in Calgary and will spend most of the summer touring in Europe.

Co-headliners Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks appear on the Hot Tours list for the third week in a row, posting their best ranking yet. The pair land at No. 3 with $2.9 million in ticket sales reported from two major U.S. markets. The pair performed on April 5 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, drawing a sellout crowd of 13,127, and on April 9 at Chicago's United Center with 14,039 in attendance. Seven shows from the tour have been reported so far this spring with grosses topping $10 million.
