Elton John advises Madonna to 'lip-synch good'

'X Factor' Champ Melanie Amaro is 'Singing Princess Warrior' in Super Bowl Ad, and Elton John's the King

melanie-elton.jpg (334×500)
If you watched more than ten continuous minutes of The X Factor USA this fall, you know that part of the winner's massive prize package was the chance to star in a Pepsi commercial during the Super Bowl. Along with that $5 million recording contract, Simon Cowell lauded the commercial as a huge opportunity for the winner to go from rising star to superstar.

On Sunday, February 5, season 1 champMelanie Amaro will finally get her big moment. And another big name is joining her in the spot: Sir Elton John. But that'sKing Elton to Melanie, as she explained the concept of the ad to EW:

"Well, basically I'm a singing princess warrior. [Laughs] And me being the singing princess warrior, I have to try to get the entire kingdom some of the sacred treasure, and the sacred treasure is, of course, Pepsi. I have to go through the talent part of the being in front of the king at his court [to get the treasure], and my talent was, of course, to sing. So I sing, I blow his mind, and I get everybody to have some of the Pepsi. I don't think I'm going to tell you any more than that. I think I'll let everybody wait until they see the commercial, because there's some special surprise guests in there that I think everybody is going to enjoy."

No need for more, Melanie. That about says it all! But, as pictures do this spectacle so much more justice than words ever could, here's Good Morning America with some sneak peek footage from the shoot, and an interesting angle on the ad:

Granted, the ABC interview is with Elton, so they're looking at this as his commercial. But with so much focus on the legend and so little on his "talent show winner" co-star, the question is no longer what Melanie's Super Bowl ad will be like. The question now seems to be whether it's Melanie's at all. Will she end up getting outshined in a commercial whose original purpose -- as her X Factor benefactors promised, anyway -- was to make her shine?

Read the full EW interview for more from Melanie about her filming experience with Elton and her forthcoming album, which she says she'll start recording "pretty soon."

Elton John advises Madonna to 'lip-synch good' during her Super Bowl show (while dressed as a king)

Oh Elton. We wouldn't want you any other way.
Elton John was always going to get Madonna back for beating him to a Golden Globe this month and - much to his own (and our) amusement - he saved his attack for live television.
The 64 year old said: "Make sure you lip-synch good".During an appearance on America TV earlier, Elton was asked what advice he had for Madonna ahead of her half time performance at Sunday's Super Bowl. At this point, a mischievous Elton saw his opportunity for revenge and he took it.

Elton then went on to imply that Madonna's Super Bowel show will be rubbish, saying: "I’ve never seen a decent one. Never ever. You have to play live, but I don’t think you can. In all fairness to everyone who’s done one before, you may be able to sing live, but it’s really hard to play live."

Elton slammed Madonna while dressed as a king. Weird.
Elton's catty comments are sure to make Madonna feel a tad under pressure, with the singer rehearsing solidly for the last two weeks. It's thought that she will sing four songs, including Vogue and Give Me All Your Luvin (spelt that way to make sure everyone still think she's cool), while bendy types from Cirque du Soleil prance about in the background.

Elton's face when she beat him at the Globes
Although Madonna is yet to snipe back at Elton, the Brit has been on her back since she beat him to Best Original Song at the Golden Globes two weeks ago. Speaking before the event on the red carpet, Elton was offended that Madge had even made it into the category, telling reporters she had no "f***ing chance of winning" over him.

And after she did win, Elton's husband David Furnish wrote on Facebook: "Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism."
If Madonna's speech was embarrassing, then Elton's behaviour before - and since - is like, way embarrassing. And we're not even mentioning the fact that he was dressed as an actual king while doing this interview.

Elton John, Lady Gaga among pop stars snubbed in Oscar best song category

Elton John, Lady Gaga among pop stars snubbed in Oscar best song category

The consolation for Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, Chris Cornell, Zooey Deschanel and other superstar pop, rock and country musicians who got snubbed in the best song Academy Award nominations announced Tuesday is that they’re in pretty stellar company.
With just two songs earning nominations —“Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets” and “Real in Rio” from “Rio” -- the list of also-rans includes a bounty of heavyweight performers and songwriters.
Yet they didn’t score enough points with Academy voters to make the final nomination list. Voters had 39 songs to sort through this year, for which they were asked to assign a score to each on a scale of 6 to 10 points, after viewing clips from each film that included the eligible song.
Only songs that received an average of 8.25 points or more could be nominated, with a maximum of five songs in the category, and no more than two songs from the same film.
Among the songs that fell short of that score were two Elton John songs from “Gnomeo and Juliet”: “Love Builds a Garden” and his duet with Lady Gaga, “Hello Hello.” Mary J. Blige’s “Living Proof” from “The Help” and Elvis Costello’s “Sparkling Day” from “One Day” were under consideration, along with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell’s “The Keeper” from “Machine Gun Preacher,” Deschanel’s “So Long” from “Winnie the Pooh” and Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am’s “Hot Wings,” also from “Rio.”
One of the most powerful songs to appear in a movie last year was J. Ralph’s “Hell and Back,” sung by Willie Nelson. But because it appeared in a documentary, director Danfung Dennis’ “Hell and Back Again” about the war in Afghanistan, it was a longshot for a nomination.

Country musicians with songs in mainstream hits didn't fare any better: Zac Brown was one of the writers of “Where the River Goes” from the remake of “Footloose,” and Brad Paisley was eligible, with co-writer Robbie Williams, for “Collision of Worlds,” from “Cars 2.”
And even being an Academy Award veteran was no guarantee of a nomination this year: Eight-time Oscar winner and 19-time nominee Alan Menken didn’t make the cut with “Star Spangled Man” from “Captain America.”
As others have noted, if this year’s Oscar telecast runs late, it won’t be because of a surfeit of nominated song performances.
