The brakes have been put on a bid to rush through planning permission for Elton John’s big concert in Shrewsbury later this year – by a councillor who today claimed he had “serious” health and safety concerns.
The sell-out concert, which is predicted to attract a crowd of more than 17,000, is due to take place at Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow on June 12.But Councillor Jon Tandy said today he had “big concerns” about issues including parking, pedestrian safety and disruption to local residents.
Plans were due to be given the stamp of approval by officers on Friday – but Councillor Tandy’s action means they will be brought before the council’s planning committee on Thursday as an urgent matter.

Antigua & Barbuda featured prominently during the opening of the Tony Award-winning Billy Elliot: The Musical at the Canon Theatre in Toronto on March 1. Sir Elton John attended opening night and wrote the music for the show. The Toronto premiere also attracted the likes of sportscaster Brian Williams, So You Think You Can Dance Canada judge Tre Armstrong, and Canada AM host Seamus O’Regan.
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Office in Canada, headed by Erica Henry-Jackman, has embarked on a host of ambient marketing activities for Antigua & Barbuda’s upcoming 2011 Spring-Summer tourism campaign. Ambient marketing is also called place-based marketing; it is marketing or advertising that occurs wherever customers happen to be, it is memorable because it is usually unexpected and unconventional.
This marketing approach for the Spring – Summer Campaign was chosen due to the growth in Canadian arrivals for Antigua and the announcement by Air Canada Vacations that it will continue its twice-weekly winter service into Antigua for summer 2011.
According to Henry-Jackman, “As we embark on promotions for the celebration of our Pearl Independence Anniversary the Billy Elliot Musical provided a great platform for Antigua & Barbuda to celebrate America’s first black director, Mr Egbert Austin Williams, born in Antigua in 1875. Egbert Austin Williams, known as Bert Williams, the legendary comedian, is considered by many to be the greatest vaudeville performer in the history of the American stage.”

Sir Elton John to rock La Crosse Center
http://www.winonadailynews.com/news/local/article_46a9a3f6-487d-11e0-84d7-001cc4c002e0.html
LA CROSSE, Wis. - Elton John is coming to town. Don't adjust your bifocals - it's true. Elton John is coming to the La Crosse Center at 8 p.m. April 19.
John will appear with his band - Davey Johnstone on guitar, Bob Birch on bass, John Mahon on percussion, Nigel Olsson on drums and Kim Bullard on keyboards - in a "Greatest Hits Live" concert, featuring No. 1 chart hits and classic album tracks from throughout John's five-decade career.
Before you rush to the La Crosse Center and start camping out, tickets don't go on sale until 11 a.m. March 14. And most tickets likely will be sold over the Internet.
La Crosse Center Director Art Fahey said he's been working with Fred Frank of Frank Productions for more than a year to make the show happen, but was never sure it would.
"There's probably no bigger touring act in the world who sells out wherever he goes," Frank said. Tickets were gone in an hour for shows Frank promoted last year in Duluth and Mankato, Minn.
"In Mankato, we had over 300 people in line and not all of them got a ticket," Frank said. He recommends ordering tickets online.
The La Crosse Center will release more details about tickets later this week.
So get ready for "Your Song," "Daniel," "Rocket Man," "Bennie and the Jets" and many more, including selections from "The Union," John's and Leon Russell's collaboration.
"This will be one incredible evening," said Brent Smith, president of the La Crosse Center board of directors. "Sir Elton John ranks arguably as one of the top artists to play our downtown venue. I am sure we are in for one amazing night when this world-renowned artist performs in La Crosse."

George Michael helps others make money
http://www.iol.co.za/tonight/gossip/george-michael-helps-others-make-money-1.1037700George Michael is happy for people to profit from his stint in prison.
The troubled singer served four weeks of an eight-week sentence for driving under the influence of drugs in September 2010 and admits he encouraged the inmates at Suffolk’s highpoint prison to get his autograph in order to sell it on later.
He said: “The strange thing about it is the whole wing had been told they couldn’t come anywhere near me for an autograph, I did absolutely every single one of them – and every staff member as well. I used to say, ‘Go and get a bit of prison paper and then it will be worth something, especially years down the line – get a bit of HMS prison paper with a George Michael signature’, so I used to do that.”
The ‘Careless Whisper’ hitmaker – who is rumoured to have split from long-term partner Kenny Goss – admits he was boosted by the letters he received from other celebrities, including Sir Elton John, Boy George and his former Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley, while he was behind bars.
He told BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans: “Elton wrote to me in the nick, which was nice, and so did Boy George, he wrote me a lovely letter. We spoke a few days ago, and I got a letter from Paul McCartney, which was lovely. George got through to me on emailaprisoner.com which I thought was fantastic. There’s a service where you can pay £5 a letter to write to a prisoner you know.
“Andrew got through to me from regular channels.”
George – whose former lover Anselmo Feleppa died of an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage in 1993 - admitted he is now “completely clean” of drugs and hinted his problems stemmed from unresolved grief.
Speaking about his prison sentence, he said: “I just felt it was a logical conclusion to a whole period of very confusing times for me. I’ve never done anything in my life that I was so ashamed of, and I’d done this thing repeatedly which I didn’t understand. But having understood it, I still felt like I had a bill to pay.
“I was terribly ashamed, every time it happened. Even though it was a mistake, rather than a decision each time, I didn’t understand why it wasn’t hitting my subconscious hard enough to stop it.
“And then I went in to proper, proper therapy and I’m now clean, of anti-depressants as well. Though they are miraculous in situations, sometimes they can really cloak what’s going on and for the first time I had proper therapy about bereavement without anti-depressants.” - Bang Showbiz
Video: Billy Joel Plays 'Summer Highland Falls' at Shea Stadium
http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/blogs/rolling-stone-video-blog/exclusive-video-billy-joel-plays-summer-highland-falls-at-shea-stadium-20110307
Tomorrow Billy Joel is releasing his 2008 Shea Stadium concert on CD and DVD – and we've got the exclusive video of his 1976 classic "Summer Highland Falls" from the show. The concert – which was the last concert ever held at Shea Stadium– features many of Joel's most famous songs as well as duets with Tony Bennett, John Mayer and Paul McCartney.
This summer Bill Joel is releasing his long-awaited memoir The Book of Joel, which was co-written by Fred Schruers. Joel hasn't performed a concert since a short run of shows with Elton John in early 2010. He is currently recovering from a double hip replacement and devoting much of his time to his new motorcycle shop in Osyster, Bay Long Island.
In 2007 Joel told Rolling Stone that he could definitely see the day coming when he'd stop touring for good. "I don’t want to make one of those grand retirement speeches," he said. "I see pictures of myself and I'm like, 'Oh God. You never looked like a rock star, but now you look like a rock star’s grandfather.' There is a physicality to it. Once you get to a certain age, you just aren’t going to be able to do it, grandpa."
