HOT FROM FOX...
SIR ELTON JOHN TO PERFORM ON "IDOL GIVES BACK" ON BEHALF OF ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, ON FOX
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Joins Special as Not-For-Profit Partner
As part of his global effort to raise awareness for and to end HIV/AIDS, Sir Elton John will perform on IDOL GIVES BACK, airing Wednesday, April 21 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX, on behalf of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, The Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox, Jeff Beck & Joss Stone and Mary J. Blige & the All-Star Band will also perform.
In addition, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has joined IDOL GIVES BACK as a not-for-profit partner on the charity special.
Iconic superstar Sir Elton John has become a legend since forming his first band in 1961 and continues to sell out concerts all over the world. In 1992 in the U.S., and then in 1993 in the U.K., John established the Elton John AIDS Foundation to support innovative HIV prevention programs, efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS and direct care and support services for people living with the disease. Collectively, the two organizations have raised $220 million since inception in support of projects in 55 countries around the world, including significant funding dedicated to programs in their respective home countries. John's collaboration with Tim Rice on the music for "The Lion King" garnered him a Grammy Award and an Academy Award in 1994. In 2004, John and his band began a residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for "The Red Piano," which ran until April 2009 and totaled 241 shows. In 2006, he released the autobiographical album, "The Captain & The Kid," the sequel to "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy." In 2007, John released "Rocket Man: The Definitive Hits," a collection of 18 classic hit songs. Also that year, for the first time ever, John's entire catalogue of nearly 500 tracks (90 singles and 32 albums) became available to download legally. John will be on the road in 2010 with Billy Joel and with Ray Cooper, as well as with his band, including Bob Birch, Kim Bullard, Davey Johnstone, John Mahon and Nigel Olsson. He will also be in the studio recording a new album in collaboration with Bernie Taupin and Leon Russell.
Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In an interview with host Ryan Seacrest, Bill and Melinda Gates will describe their commitment to improving health around the world, and share why they are so optimistic that support for IDOL GIVES BACK can make a difference and save lives.
The brainchild of Simon Fuller, IDOL GIVES BACK has made history by raising over $140 million for charity to date. This year's special celebration will help raise awareness and funds to benefit various U.S. and international charities, including Children's Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children's U.S. Programs and the United Nations Foundation.
As previously announced, News Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Coca-Cola, AT&T and ExxonMobil will return as corporate sponsors of IDOL GIVES BACK and will generously donate to the historic Emmy Award-winning television event. Viewers will once again be able to make donations during and following the show. In addition, the week's voting results will be revealed, sending one of the finalists home.
Tickets are currently on sale for the IDOL GIVES BACK celebration at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and can be purchased by calling 1-800-745-3000 or by visiting ticketmaster.com. Net proceeds from ticket sales will go to the IDOL GIVES BACK Foundation.
Additionally, viewers can visit www.idolgivesback.org now and join the "Help Me Give Back" program, an online initiative that empowers individuals and teams to help raise money for IDOL GIVES BACK. The website also allows access to an online auction featuring one-of-a-kind items such as an AMERICAN IDOL Season Ticket Pass, a Meet & Greet with Simon Cowell, a pair of autographed sneakers from Ellen DeGeneres and more. Sir Elton Hercules John has had one of the most illustrious, prolific, and flamboyant careers in the history of rock. And as a testament to his chosen middle name, he has also had to overcome a number of obstacles and tragedies along the way.
Taped in New York City, this interview with Lisa Robinson for The Inside Track radio show was aired in support of Elton's 1982 Jump Up! However, besides talking about the John Lennon tribute "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)," the conversation doesn't cover his new material. Instead, the topics include his outrageous image during the 70's, his coming out in a Rolling Stone article, his unhappy childhood, his songwriting process, and recollections of some of his biggest concerts.
This interview captures Sir Elton at an interesting crossroads in his career. His status of rock legend is evident through the content of his stories and the way he is able to pepper certain names, numbers and events into his talking. At the same time, he also seems weary of his past. He is able to laugh at his old flamboyance but appears ready to approach his future with some hard-earned wisdom.

So You Wanna Be a Tax Exile?

http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/blog/index.php/2010/04/so-you-wanna-be-a-tax-exile/
In the early 1970’s, Denis Healey, a member of the Labour Party and then-Shadow Chancellor of Great Britain, warned that there would be “howls of anguish from those rich enough to pay over 75% on their last slice of earnings.” The idea of wealth re-distribution sounded great to those in need of it, but they never did receive as much as they could have. For the rest of that decade and on into the 1980s, the list of musicians who left Britain for tax reasons included Ringo Starr, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Freddie Mercury, Pink Floyd, Sting, Phil Collins, Ozzy Osbourne, Cat Stevens, Ray Davies, and Bad Company. On a day like today in the U.S., it’s a natural time to wonder if you can take a page from these rockers’ books and evade some taxes yourself. The short answer is “no,” but just in case you ever find yourself in the position of making millions of dollars in a country where the government exorbitantly taxes the rich, you may want to hear from some folks who have been through the decision making process, like Rod Stewart and Elton John.
"Go on, take the money and run"
"Go on, take the money and run"

Fast forward to the 2:44 mark in the interview (press play, then click on the first “t” in “Stewart”). You can check out what else they talked about in the Concert Summary box.
Rod Stewart moved to Los Angeles to avoid paying a whopping 84% of his income in taxes. Knowing that it would be difficult to keep him there (because his family, favorite football clubs and favorite pubs were located in England at the time), those close to him didn’t tell him he had to stay out of his home country for a whole year. He thus claims that L.A. was chosen by these same people because its distance from London would deter his return. However, in both this interview as well as another interview recorded in 1978, he cites the L.A. music scene as one of his motivating factors. Indeed, in the ‘78 interview, he credits L.A. as the inspiration for a few songs, saying he would have never been able to write “The Killing of Georgie,” “Hot Legs,” or “You’re Insane” if he wasn’t living in “the rock and roll capital of the world.”

"Whatever, I've still got enough."

The conversation talks about taxes during the first minute of the interview. You can check out what else they talked about in the Concert Summary box.

Elton John, on the other hand, decided to stay in Britain, even making such sacrifices as selling his “orgy house” in L.A. His reasoning is simple: he never intended to leave Britain because he didn’t belong anywhere else. It also might help that the tax rate on the super-rich had been lowered to a “mere” 60% by the time this interview was recorded and, frankly, that he had made so much money he could live comfortably even after taxes. Rod Stewart uses this same argument to explain why Paul McCartney was able to stay in the UK.
On this tax day, fellow Americans, no matter what situation you find yourself in, remember that it could be a lot worse. And, considering the Rolling Stones began recording Exile on Main St. after moving to France for tax reasons, sometimes maybe it’s for the better. Here’s to hoping we are all eventually faced with the difficult decision Rod and Elton had to consider.

Hansen: Highway to (the) Well now looks profitable

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100415/NEWS03/4150349/1003/

That would be a treat, wouldn't it? Imagine the "Highway to Hell" crew singing "Candle in the Wind."

It isn't easy. It is possible, however, to picture the two acts teaming on "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Almost.

Whatever, the Elton John tickets are almost gone. The AC/DC show is a sellout. Which means 30,000 people roaming the downtown streets this weekend.

Hard-rock band AC/DC was formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1974. The band will play at Wells Fargo Arena at 7:30 Saturday night. The show is sold out.
