Elton urges US state to save AIDS funds

Singer Elton John is urging the Governor of the US state of Florida, Rick Scott, to protect a program that helps low-income HIV/AIDS patients get medication needed to control the virus.
Sir Elton, founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, wrote to Scott on Tuesday after hearing the Department of Health was considering changes in income eligibility.
A department spokeswoman says there are no immediate plans to change the AIDS Drug Assistance Program, though it held hearings to discuss the possibility of lowering income requirements to participate.
In their letter, Sir Elton and foundation Chairman David Furnish say lowering income eligibility could mean 1600 people will no longer get help obtaining antiretroviral medication.

‘Billy Elliot the Musical’ a treat to see

With 10 Tony Awards, three Academy Awards nominations and millions of fans, the story of Billy Elliot has tapped its way into the heart of many via the stage and screen.
The 2000 movie about a boy who discovers a surprising talent Ń ballet Ń scored numerous awards and millions in ticket sales across the globe.  And when “Billy Elliot” was adapted into a musical and premiered in 2005, the story proved that it had legs beyond a movie screen.
“To me, the story is universal,” said Susie McMonagle, who plays Mrs. Wilkinson, Elliot’s dance teacher, in the musical adaptation playing in Denver through the weekend. “A kid finds out he is good at somethingÉand it’s all about the courage it takes to pursue that dream.”
Specifically, “Billy Elliot” follows a boy as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, discovering a surprising talent that inspires his family and his whole community. A cast of 45 and the Tony Award-winning creative team of director Stephen Daldry, choreographer Peter Darling and writer Lee Hall bring the story to life on stage. Living legend Elton John was responsible for the music.
McMonagle attributes the musical’s success to its great story, the way it is staged and the music of Elton John. She particularly enjoys how the musical shows how necessary it is to have family and friends rally around a person to help them achieve their dream.
McMonagle said she was drawn to how her character Ń Mrs. Wilkinson Ń is a no-nonsense person who tells it how it is.
“She has a huge heart that you don’t really see until the end,” she said. “She’s funny, and she has the best outrageous clothes.”

"The Lion King." (Walt Disney Studios)
On the heels of the announcement that the 1997 Oscar-winning blockbusterTitanic” would be sailing into theaters next year in a 3-D edition, Walt Disney Studios announced that its 1994 Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning animated classic “The Lion King” would be returning to theaters Sept. 16 in a new Disney Digital 3-D edition. After the two-week theatrical engagement, Simba, Mufasa, Nala, Timor and the gang will make its 3-D and 2-D Blu-ray debut on Oct. 15.
“The Lion King” has been a major cash cow for Disney. Disney is reporting that the movie — which features Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-winning score and Elton John and Tim Rice’s Academy Award-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” – is the bestselling home entertainment release of all time. Not only that, it also roared its way to a worldwide box-office tally of $783.9 million.
The film spawned two made-for-video-sequels, “The Lion King 1 1/2” and “The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride” (which will also be making their Blu-ray debuts). And the Broadway theatrical production opened on the Great White Way on Nov. 13, 1997, winning six Tony Awards including best musical. It’s still going strong, having played more than 5, 600 performances. Two years later, it opened in London, where it also is still drawing crowds.

Seats still available for Sir Elton

http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/163098/seats-still-available-sir-elton

Tickets remain for the Sir Elton John concert at Dunedin's still-under-construction Forsyth Barr Stadium on November 25.
Capital C: Concerts managing director Phil Sprey said yesterday "a couple of thousand" seats were still available for the first concert by an international performer at the stadium.
Mr Sprey was originally considering holding a second Sir Elton concert in the stadium, if demand had justified it.
However, public ticket sales for the concert opened the day after the Canterbury earthquake on February 22, which had "a terrible" effect on sales, he said.
"[But] losing a few sales is a hell of a lot better than losing your life."
Nearly half (45%) of the 30,000 seats sold so far have been bought in Dunedin, with another 20% from the Otago region, Mr Sprey said.
The North Island and top of the South Island accounted for 33% of sales, with the remaining 2% bought overseas, mostly in Australia and the United States. A recent reconnaissance of the stadium had been encouraging.
"As the promoter, we are extremely excited about the stadium as, when we visited and stood on the pitch, the atmosphere was a very intimate feel," Mr Sprey said.
"Unlike other New Zealand stadiums, the closeness of the seats to the pitch and the perception of distance made a unique impact, where even a seat as far away as the opposite end still had a close feel."
He was confident the remaining tickets, which were "mostly in the better sections", would sell out well before the concert. The concert was Sir Elton's first in the South Island for 20 years.
