Sir Elton John says Jay Z's public show of support for marriage equality is a pivotal moment and reveals he called the rap mogul to personally thank him, during an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell.

“Jay-Z, who’s probably the most respected African-American artist, came out and said not only is it wrong to not have gay marriage, but any discrimination in life is wrong," John tells Mitchells. " It was an incredibly moving statement. I phoned him up in England and said, ‘You have no idea what you’ve just said, how powerful this is.’"

John goes on to compare Jay-Z's support for President Obama's stance on same-sex marriage last May to the late Princess Diana holding the hand of an HIV/AIDS patient during a hospital visit in the 1980s. "When Jay-Z said that, it was a pivotal moment," John says. "And I take my hat off to him. I respect him so much for doing that. And, you know, when I next see him, I'm gonna give him the biggest hug."

Elton John Book on AIDS Coming Next Week

Elton John Book on AIDS Coming Next Week

Love Is the Cure: On Life, Loss, and the End of AIDS

In the 1980s, Elton John saw friend after friend, loved one after loved one, perish needlessly from AIDS. In the midst of the plague, he befriended Ryan White, a young Indiana boy ostracized by his town and his school because of the HIV infection he had contracted from a blood transfusion. Ryan's inspiring life and devastating death led Elton to two realizations: His own life was a mess. And he had to do something to help stop the AIDS crisis.
Since then, Elton has dedicated himself to overcoming the plague and the stigma of AIDS. He has done this through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised and donated $275 million to date to fighting the disease worldwide.

For years, Elton John and his friend, tennis great Billie Jean King, have been holding an annual charity tennis tournament to raise money for the fight against HIV and AIDS.  This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event, and now the location, players and date have been revealed on Elton’s website.

The event, called Mylan World TeamTennis Smash Hits presented by GEICO, will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 16.  Playing with Elton and Billie Jean will tennis superstars Andre Agassi, Stefanie Graf and Andy Roddick, among others.  Tickets go on sale Monday, July 16 at 10 a.m. ET.
As always, the event will feature two teams, respectively captained by Elton and Billie Jean, who’ll play five sets of World TeamTennis: one set each of men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  Elton will also play in a celebrity doubles match to open the event.

Over the years, Smash Hits has raised more than 10 million dollars for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and local AIDS charities.  This year’s funds will go to the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force.

Elton said in a  statement, “It is always such a great pleasure to co-host this wonderful event with my dear friend Billie Jean King…I urge all of the tennis fans and concerned citizens in the Greater Pittsburgh area to support this event and bring their families for a wonderful evening of tennis for a great cause.”

Elton John Sits Down With Matt Lauer For Revealing Interview On NBC's Today

Elton John Sits Down With Matt Lauer For Revealing Interview On NBC's 'Today'

Sir Elton John joins NBC's Today for an exclusive sit-down with Matt Lauer to chat about his first-ever memoir, Love is the Cure: On Life, Loss and the End of AIDS.
According to Today, "John speaks candidly about the personal toll AIDS has taken on his life, and his passion for his work in the fight against the disease. He also opens up about his struggle with drugs, alcohol and bulimia, and he reveals deeply personal details about going public with his own sexuality."
Sounds intense! More after the jump.
The interview, which took place at John’s home outside of London, will air on NBC’s Today in two parts Tuesday and Wednesday July 17 and 18.
Here are a few excerpts:
"MATT LAUER:
During the early days of the AIDS episode, you were this rock star. And you were not living a life practicing safe sex. Weren't you afraid?
ELTON JOHN:
You know what? When you take a drug and you take a drink and you mix those two together, you think you're invincible.
ELTON JOHN:
I couldn't remember. That's-- I mean, I came out of this HIV negative.
MATT LAUER:
There but for the grace of God.
ELTON JOHN:
Yes. I was the luckiest person in the world.
MATT LAUER:
Here's how you write about it in the book, "I was consumed by cocaine, booze, and who knows what else. I apparently never got the memo that the me generation had ended."
ELTON JOHN:
Yeah.
MATT LAUER:
You feel guilty about it?
ELTON JOHN:
I do.
MATT LAUER:
Don't you think you've made up for it?

ELTON JOHN:

It sounds like Matt and Elton are really going there. Will you be tuning in for the Today interview on July 17 and 18, Instincters?
