Rock Nation School Tribute Performs in LA

Rock Nation School Tribute Performs in LA

http://losangeles.broadwayworld.com/article/Rock_Nation_School_Tribute_Performs_in_LA_20010101

There was standing room only when the Rock Nation School Tribute to Elton John, featuring three members of the Elton John Band and student musicians, drew hundreds of fans to the famed Canyon Club near Los Angeles on Sunday, September 26.

Guitarist Davey Johnstone, drummer Nigel Olsson and percussionist John Mahon sat in on several Elton John songs being performed by young students in the two-hour show, including "Rocket Man" and "Take Me to the Pilot," as well as three original songs written by 12-year-old Ben Babylon. The son of Elton John's late keyboardist and arranger, Guy Babylon, is a student at Rock Nation, and has composed several songs, two of which were inspired by his father. Although billed as a tribute to Elton John, the concert also paid homage to elder Babylon, who died of a heart attack just over one year ago.

Chasen Hampton, Tony Avalon

Babylon and Mahon opened the show with "No Goodbyes on the Road," Babylon's song about people being in such a hurry that there often is not time to say goodbye. That was followed by the more upbeat "Write Your Own Song," on which Olsson performed with Babylon and Mahon. Johnstone then joined the group on "Goodbye Superman," Babylon's stirring tribute to his late father, made all the more powerful by Johnstone's razor-sharp guitar riffs.

"It means a lot to me, to be here for Guy," Johnstone said. "He was my closest bud in a musical sense, and in a sports sense. Whenever we were touring, we would discuss basketball and soccer as much as music. I miss him dearly.

"Guy was an influence on all of us musically and as a friend," said Mahon. "It is a fitting tribute to him, for us to actually play on stage with his son."

"Ben has come a long way through a tough time," Olsson added. "It's very impressive to see him rock out."

John Mahon

Many of Guy Babylon's friends and relatives were in the audience, including his widow, songwriter Kathy Babylon, his parents and his sister. Also present were several VIP guests from music, film and television, including actor/singer Frankie Avalon, film composer Max Di Carlo, television writer/producer Charlie Bowyer, and film producer/director Peter R.J. Deyell.

"After watching him (Ben Babylon) perform, it's clear that he really understands music," Deyell said. "When he plays keyboards, his whole body is playing. The other musicians in the show were also excellent, especially the drummers."

Peter R.J. Deyell and Jesse Johnstone

Approximately two-dozen students from Rock Nation School took turns performing in the concert. Among them was drummer Juliet Johnstone, daughter of Davey Johnstone. Also performing was Johnstone's son, Jesse, who is a professional recording engineer, but also plays bass, as well as other instruments.

Rock Nation is a private rock-music school with four locations throughout the Los Angeles area. Owner Tony Avalon has produced many tribute concerts featuring the music of different rock stars. However, said that having members of the Elton John Band take time to perform onstage with his students, at no charge, was especially meaningful.

Davey Johnstone

"This show was a celebration of two musical geniuses," he said. "It was very heart-warming. Everybody in the audience was blown away, and the kids were awesome. Having them play with rock stars that I looked up to was amazing. It was a night to remember."

Max Di Carlo, Davey Johnstone

Hello! If you're here from the title, you know what I'm looking for!

I've been writing music for 10+ years but have never considered myself a good (or even decent) lyricist. I'm looking for someone to team up with and maybe we can write some killer songs!

Please e-mail me if you're interested, tell me your three favorite songs (and why) and feel free to include some sample lyrics if you want!

Elton John memorabilia on sale

Sir Elton John memorabilia is going on sale

Monday September 27 2010
A highly-prized collection of Sir Elton John memorabilia which is being sold by his mother is generating global interest from buyers, auctioneers have said.
The treasure trove includes more than 100 gold and platinum discs, tour jackets and VIP passes his mother, Sheila Farebrother, used for backstage access at his concerts.
Two multi-platinum discs marking the success of Candle In The Wind, which recorded more than 33 million sales when it was re-released in tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997, are being sold.
There are also two platinum discs for the first million sales of the 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, plus items from Bob Halley, the musician's manager for more than 30 years.
Among the 227 items from Sir Elton are four silk Versace stage suits that he wore on tour and artwork by Sam Taylor-Wood which featured on the sleeve of his album, Songs from the West Coast.
But the highlight of the sale is said to be two sets of framed discs commemorating the 63-year-old musician's 43 million record sales in the United States.
Mrs Farebrother is selling the collection at Gorringes Auctioneers in Lewes, East Sussex, on October 19 as she has downsized to a new home on the south coast.
She said: "It wasn't until the concert in Madison Square Garden in 1974 when John Lennon made an appearance on stage and sang with Elton that I realised he had become a world superstar."

]Reginald Kenneth Dwight was born in Pinner, Middlesex, England in 1947. In 1966, Elton formed his first band called Bluesology. Bluesology started out backing visiting U.S. soul artists, like the Isley Brothers, Billy
Stewart and Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles.

Also, in 1966, Bluesology became the supporting band for Long John Baldry. In fact, it was from this band that Reginald got his stage name by taking the first names of Bluesology band members Elton Dean and John Baldry.

Elton teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin in 1967 in a partnership that continues today. They formed Rocket Records in 1973.

On the big screen, you'll see Elton playing the Pinball Wizard in Pete Townsend's film version of "Tommy."

Little known fact: Elton plays piano on the Hollies 1970 hit, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother."

On the charts, Elton John has had at least one Billboard top 40 song every year between 1970 and 1990, including seven number one hits. He also has had seven consecutive number one albums.

Here are Elton John's twenty biggest single hits, according to Billboard magazine:

1. That's What Friends Are For - 1986 - Elton's last #1 single, but his biggest, was a collaboration with Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. Proceeds from this song went into AIDS research.

2. Don't Go Breaking My Heart - 1976 - a duet with Kiki Dee.

3. Crocodile Rock - 1973 - Elton's first #1 single.

4. Island Girl - 1975

5. Philadelphia Freedom - 1975 - listed as The Elton John Band.

6. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - 1975 - a credit on the label goes to "the Reggae guitars of Dr. Winston O'Boogie" who was actually John Lennon doing backup vocals.

7. Bennie and the Jets - 1974 - from the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.

8. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - 1973

9. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - 1974 - from the "Caribou" album.

10. I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That - 1988

11. Daniel - 1973 - from the "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player" album.

12. Little Jeannie - 1980 - Elton's biggest hit in four years.

13. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues - 1984 - harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder.

14. Someone Saved My Life Tonight - 1975 - from the "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" album, which went to #1 on the album charts the first week it was released.

15. The Bitch Is Back - 1974

16. Sad Songs (Say So Much) - 1984

17. Rocket Man - 1972 - a song often compared to David Bowie's "Space Oddity."

18. Candle In The Wind - 1987 - originally recorded in 1973 for the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album, this haunting ballad was rerecorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. It has sold over 37 million copies.

19. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word - 1976 - from the "Blue Moves" album.

20. Nikita - 1986 - featuring backing vocals from George Michael of Wham! fame.

Elton John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and he was knighted in 1998.

Billboard ranked Elton, in 2008, as the most successful male artist on their list of "Top 100 All Time Artists", coming in third, overall, just behind The Beatles and Madonna.

Paintings by Songwriter Bernie Taupin

French Quarter Painting By Bernie Taupin
French Quarter By Bernie Taupin
Songwriter and longtime Elton John collaborator Bernie Taupin is also a painter. Although his artwork has been available in the past, he has recently joined with Limelight Agency to “reboot” his art program. According to his website, “Limelight honcho Daniel Crosby is the man responsible for aiding and encouraging Bernie to rise from the ashes and return to the creative platform. Expect to see a major resurgence in both Bernie’s output of abstract and multi-media canvases along with a higher profile on the celebrity art scene.”
In describing his artwork, Taupin says:
“Canvas to me is simply the visual extension of what I have spent my life creating through words. The imagination, in my estimation, is the most powerful tool the artist possess enabling us to conjure up beautiful distraction for the ears and eyes.
I have no formula except that which comes from what I dream, feel and see. To me colors are like words…they express emotions…likewise texture and mediums display an abundance of moods.”

The Bata Shoe Museum
