BEIJING:Pop icon Elton John publicly dedicated his only concert in Beijing to Chinese artist and political critic Ai Weiwei, sending a murmur of shock through an audience accustomed to tight censorship of entertainment. Minutes into a more than two-hour show Sunday night, John told the audience that the performance was dedicated ”to the spirit and talent of Ai Weiwei,” according to several audience members. They said the crowd rumbled in recognition that Ai remains a touchy subject for the Chinese government. An internationally acclaimed sculptor and installation artist, Ai has used his art and his renown to draw attention to social injustice. He was detained for nearly three months last year, and he remains barred from leaving China. Ai and John met each other briefly on Sunday before the concert. ”I super like him,” Ai said on his feed on Twitter, which is banned in China but on which he has 180,000 followers. China-based online media sites reported on John’s Beijing show, as they did on a Friday night performance in Shanghai, but they did not report John’s remark about Ai. The Chinese government exercises tight control of live performances, requiring artists to submit detailed lists of songs, casts and crew members before approval is given. Censors further tightened scrutiny after singer Bjork shouted ”Tibet, Tibet” at the close of a song titled ”Declare Independence” at a Shanghai performance in 2008.

Artists who are involved in gay and lesbian activities must not be allowed to perform in Malaysia as they will promote the wrong values," Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi, chief of the youth wing of the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), told AFP. The legendary singer-songwriter, who is on the Asian leg of a worldwide tour, performed in Malaysia last November to a sell-out crowd despite a similar protest from the Islamic party. The 65-year-old singer was married to his Canadian partner David Furnish, 49, in a civil ceremony in England in 2005. On Christmas Day 2010 they became parents to a child conceived using a donor egg and born to a surrogate mother. Nasrudin said PAS did not plan any street protests to oppose the concert, but "will instead demand that authorities cancel the immoral performance to protect our society from social degradation". On Monday, John courted controversy during a performance in China by dedicating his Beijing show to Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. PAS often protests concerts by Western acts, saying they promote promiscuity and corrupt the minds of youngsters. The party is a key member of an opposition alliance led by Anwar Ibrahim that hopes to unseat Malaysia's long-ruling coalition in elections that must be called by mid-2013. Homosexuality has long been taboo in Malaysia, where 60 percent of the population is Muslim and sodomy is a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Elton John (Reg Dwight) was the keyboardist for The Bread and Beer Band in the late 1960s - at the same time he was attempting to launch his solo career as Elton John. "Dick Barton Theme (The Devil's Gallop)" was the band's only official release. The Bread and Beer Band was Reg Dwight, Caleb Quaye on guitar, Roger Pope on drums, Bernie Calvert on bass, and Lennox Jackson on percussion. They were produced by Tony King. The song, written by Charles Williams, had been a radio theme song on the BBC in the 1940s. Fortunately for all of us music-loving humans, The Bread & Beer Band was not a success, but young Elton John managed to keep his carrer going for the next 40 years!!!! And still going strong! It's difficult to explain the amazement we felt as the album began to take shape, but I remember when we finished work on the title track... it just floored me. I thought it was the best thing I'd ever heard in my life." Reviews Evening Standard I have aways held that the best of pop music is closely related to the culture and tempo of the moment. Pop is, I believe, only a poetic and musical illustration of the times and it's for this reason that the blues have always held such enormous potency, and why the Beatles with their songs about meter maids, old age, spinsters, etc. have found such a huge appreciation. This record by Elton John, nicely recorded though it may be, is, to my mind, practically unrelated to anything I experience. While the melodies are sweet, it is unadventurous, the lyrics seem to be a bit self-consiously cultured and "poetic" in a highly fanciful style. The last track is the best one. Called Gulliver, it is about the death of a dog, but it is evenually spoiled by a musical montage of no great significance. To be fair though I think we'd do well to watch out for Elton John. He has a talent. When he gets less fanciful, and less pretentious, he will I'm sure have a more worthwhile contribution to make. Unknown (from a clipping) This is a sort of folk-rock album. When I first saw it, before I heard it, I couldn't believe that the record could be as bad as the cover design and I was right. The record is excellent. All the numbers are original and make very pleasant listening. If you have an hour to spare, give the album a spin and "turn on."

Dick James (12 December 1920 – 1 February 1986), born Leon Isaac Vapnick in the East End of London, was a music publisher and together with his son Stephen founded the DJM record label and recording studios, as well as (with Brian Epstein) The Beatles' publisher Northern Songs.
Early days
James sang with North London dance bands in his early teens, and was a regular vocalist at the Cricklewood Palais by the age of seventeen. He joined the Henry Hall band, and made first radio broadcast in 1940. Joining the Army in 1942, after World War II he continued to sing with top post-war bands, including Geraldo's. Later still, James was also a part-time member of The Stargazers, a popular early 1950s vocal group.
He was the singer of the theme songs of The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Buccaneers, from British television in the 1950s, and was a friend and associate of renowned record producer George Martin.
Switch to publishing
James entered the music publishing business as his singing career tapered off. In 1958 he joined Sidney Bron Music as a song-plugger but decided to leave and open Dick James Music in 1961. In early 1963 he was contacted by Brian Epstein who was looking for a publisher for the second Beatles single "Please Please Me" and agreed an appointment for 11 o'clock the following morning. Having arranged a previous meeting at 10.00, Epstein left in disgust at 10.25 when the executive he was due to meet failed to appear and arrived at James's office at 10.40. Epstein apologised to the receptionist for being early and offered to wait until 11.00; nevertheless, the receptionist contacted James who promptly ushered Epstein into his office. Having heard the record and telling Epstein it was a number one James was invited by Epstein to publish and promote it. James then called Philip Jones, producer of the TV show Thank Your Lucky Stars, played the record down the phone to him and secured the band's first nationwide television appearance.[3] The pair subsequently established Northern Songs Ltd., with Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney, to publish Lennon and McCartney's original songs. (Fellow Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr were also signed to Northern Songs as songwriters, but did not renew their contracts in 1968). James's company, Dick James Music, administered Northern Songs.
What initially began as an amicable working relationship between the Beatles and James disintegrated by the late 1960s: the Beatles considered that James had betrayed and taken advantage of them when he sold Northern Songs in 1969 without offering the band an opportunity to buy control of the publishing company. James profited handsomely from the sale of Northern Songs, but the Beatles never again had the rights to their own songs.
During the 1960s he also handled Billy J. Kramer and Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Later days
James signed Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin as untried unknowns in 1967 after his son Stephen, who had been working with his father since 1963, found Elton John using their recording studios late at night without permission. Stephen who had started the recording studios and opened a record production company called This Productions formed DJM Records in 1969. Indeed, all of John's early releases (up to 1976) were issued on the DJM record label. The label also carried Jasper Carrott, RAH Band and John Inman.
John formed his own Rocket label in 1976, but in 1982, John was involved in a long court case with James about royalties. In June 1985, the British music magazine NME reported that John was suing James over the rights to his earlier material.
Death
James died in London of a heart attack in early 1986, at the age of 65. Dick James Music was acquired by PolyGram which was in turn acquired by Universal Music Group.
