KEN DOLL… Squid’s never been much of a circus fan, considering Squid can outshine a two-armed juggler any day, even while listening to music and eating a tuna sandwich. But Squid’s current entertainment of choice has become cataloging the never-ending list of faux pas to come out of Marina Coast Water District meetings, where hostility reigns supreme.
Squid was tickled to see (while perusing 100 pages of titillating meeting minutes) that Board Director Ken Nishi finds the Marina Coast circus dull. During a strategic planning meeting in June, Nishi said “he feels like going and taking a nap.”
But this isn’t nappy-time talk: “Director Nishi said that… they will never work together as a team.” The audience can thank fellow Director Jan Shriner for the plot twist: She has sassily suggested General Manager Jim Heitzman’s salary ($269,000, including bennies) is too big. Ken didn’t like that. Like Puck, Pedro and the peanut butter jar on The Real World, they all proceeded to call each other rude
Nishi wants to stay in the house: He stepped down from the board last year only to re-run for his seat. “After a few months he said he realized he missed everyone and wanted to come back,” the minutes state. Squid would considering laughing, maybe, if these clowns weren’t being entrusted with $400 million to water the Peninsula.
BOOK WORMS… Squid barely has time to read fireworks safety instructions, let alone a breezy novel. But a surge of local author submissions has Squid rethinking that policy.
Who can resist a Da Vinci Code knock-off that pegs Lovers Point as “the healing chakra of the world”? Even if it does perplex with turns of phrase like, “Suppose I tell you a tale, of a long time ago, and not so very distant.” Julian Collingwood’s Doubletime describes Pagrovians astutely: “He felt their other-worldiness, a strange disconnected calmness. Some had small smiles on their faces when he glanced at them, but he felt they weren’t meant for him… they were staring right through each other as though no one existed.”
And what about the romantic monarch lover’s dream plot in fast-reading The Butterfly’s Kingdom by Carmel’s Gwendolyn Geer Field? The main character’s rebirth parallels a caterpillar’s metamorphosis as four friends “find a spiritual path out of the mysteries of their dark and tangled past.”
Former Weekly contributor Tony Seton created a surge of summer material all by himself. “I can’t sleep,” he tells Squid, “because the characters want to continue the conversation.” His fourth novel in three months is called The Autobiography of John Dough, Gigolo. If that doesn’t get Squid’s summer fiction juices flowing, nothing will.
Sir Elton John woke up the astronauts on the final NASA shuttle mission on Thursday with a specially-recorded message – before the crew heard a clip of his track Rocket Man.
The team manning the shuttle Atlantis took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida last week to carry supplies and spare parts to the International Space Station. And they were given a starry treat on Thursday as NASA bosses broadcast a message from Sir Elton.
He said, “Good morning, Atlantis, this is Elton John. We wish you much success on your mission and a huge thank you to all the men and women at NASA who worked on the shuttle for the last three decades.”
Atlantis’ commander Christopher Ferguson replied, “Elton John. Music legend. Wow. That is absolutely fantastic.”
The crew was then played a short clip of the musician’s 1972 track Rocket Man, according to Sky News.
There have been 135 flights into space since the shuttle program was launched in 1981.

“The worst thing to do is to rush people to have a record out. They’ll make a record when they’re ready and it comes out when it is ready,” he tells Music Week.
And he reveals how he and his colleagues at Rocket are leading my example as they slowly build the careers of artists such as Murray James and Oh Land, just as his own career gradually took off at the end of the Sixties.
He also discusses his plans to launch a label at the new company, forthcoming work on his next studio album and his praise for XL and other UK independent labels whom he believes are developing acts in the right way.

Angela Weiss, Getty ImagesOscar-winning songwriter and producer T Bone Burnett is preparing to release a new live album entitled 'T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue,' on October 18, featuring selections from a benefit concert he organized at New York's Beacon Theatre last fall.
Dubbed the Speaking Clock Revue, the October 2010 event featured a star-studded lineup including Elton John, Elvis Costello, Jeff Bridges, Gregg Allman, Neko Case, John Mellencamp, Leon Russell, Ralph Stanley, Jim James, Punch Brothers, Karen Elson and The Secret Sisters. The performers were supported by T Bone's hand-picked house band, led by music director and guitarist Marc Ribot.
The concert was organized in partnership with Participant Media, in an effort to support the inclusion of music and arts education in public school systems. T Bone's collaboration with Participant was inspired by the production company's public education documentary 'Waiting for 'Superman'' by Davis Guggenheim, the Academy-Award-winning filmmaker who directed 'An Inconvenient Truth' and 'It Might Get Loud.'
T Bone had previously collaborated with the majority of the Speaking Clock Revue's performers, and chose the songs featured on the album in conjunction with the featured artists, including Neko Case and Gregg Allman's 'Midnight Rider,' and the rousing 'Fallin' & Flyin',' which he performs with Elvis Costello and Jeff Bridges.
"The privacy and the intimacy of the studio afford artists the freedom to create, but something thrilling happens in getting away from the machines and into the live communication of real-time storytelling in the larger community," T Bone says of the live album's recording. "The first tour I went on, my first job in show business, was on [Bob Dylan's] Rolling Thunder Revue, and I've come back to that type of collaborative and extraordinarily rewarding experience from time to time."

AS the countdown continues to the first Magic Summer Live concert at Hatfield House, the Welwyn Hatfield Times looks at the acts supporting Sir Elton John on Sunday with the help of DJ Neil Fox.
HEADLINER Sir Elton John is being supported by a string of artists at the Hatfield House concert on July 17.
The Lighthouse Family, Rumer, The Overtones, Wonderland and The Pierces will all perform sets at the open-air gig being held in the grounds of the stately home.
DJ Neil Fox explained why these five acts were chosen to support one of the world’s greatest performers at Magic Summer Live.
“To go with Elton we’ve got a great mix of artists. We’ve picked acts we think those who like Elton’s music will appreciate.
Lighthouse Family“They will be totally live sessions, it’s all about live music.”
* Wonderland are an Irish girl-band who released their debut album earlier this year.
Foxy said: “Wonderland are a Kian Egan from Westlife and Louis Walsh creation.
“They are good and are really excited about the concert.”
Wonderland* Rumer is a British-born solo artist, who Foxy described as “class”.
“People want to perform with Rumer,” Foxy added.
* The Overtones are a five-piece vocal harmony group.
Foxy said: “We’ve had them in here singing before and they are something special,” he added.
Rumer* The Pierces are sisters Allison and Catherine, originally from Birmingham, Alabama, but now living in New York.
Their latest album, You & I, is co-produced by Guy Berryman of Coldplay fame.
* The Lighthouse Family are the most well known of the supporting acts and Foxy believes the band will “go down a storm”.
“They were absolutely massive. Everyone knows their hits.”
He added: “And when you put all this together, it’s a real interesting line-up.”
Elton John talks exclusively to Music Week in this coming Monday’s edition about his worries over the industry not giving enough time for new talent to develop and how he is trying to do something about it at his new company.
