Rocker James Blunt to perform at Elton John's 15th annual Academy Awards celebration

Rocker James Blunt will perform at the 15th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards celebration Feb. 25 at the Pacific Design Center, the foundation announced Wednesday.

"James is a truly talented singer-songwriter," John said in a statement. "His voice and expressive lyrics enchant audiences worldwide. I have no doubt that he will do the same for our guests on Oscar night."
Blunt, 32, is up for five awards at the Grammys, which will air live on CBS on Sunday. His double-platinum debut album, "Back to Bedlam," yielded the smash hit "You're Beautiful." He toured with John in 2004, reports AP.
The Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised nearly $120 million (EUR92 million) to support HIV/AIDS prevention and services since it was founded in 1992.

Christmas Party 1974 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, December 24, 1974. Very good radio recording.
There was a time, not so many years ago, when the year-end period brought forth special Christmas releases and TV specials. There are memorable Christmas albums by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Motown even had a string of notable Christmas albums. Older fans still talk about Christmas TV specials by Kate Bush, The Carpenters (1976-1980) and, of course, Elton John (1974, 1982).
By year-end 1974, Elton John was probably as big a star as he thought he would have been, with hit albums such as Madman Across The Water, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player and the then megahit, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. On stage he was chatty and personable (even giving props to John Peel). The songs amounted to a greatest hits package (of the day) and, for that something extra, he had Rod Stewart and Gary Glitter join him on White Christmas.
Part of this Hammersmith Odeon show was broadcast live on the Old Grey Whistle Test on BBC and simulcast on radio. Fans might want to track down Elton John’s Christmas In London (Retro-Tone DVD), said to be an excellent video recording of the TV broadcast, save for the time code at the bottom of the screen. However, the video broadcast omits the songs between Skyline Pigeon and Candle In The Wind. It’s possible someone might put the entire show on YouTube but for those of us who are cinematically challenged, we’ll just have to settle for this sleigh ride down memory lane.
