Tickets sell faster than a rocket, man
http://www.scarborougheveningnews.co.uk/lifestyle/entertainment/tickets_sell_faster_than_a_rocket_man_1_3261901THOUSANDS of tickets were snapped up in minutes for Elton John’s Scarborough concert.
Almost 8,000 tickets went on sale yesterday following the announcement on Tuesday that Sir Elton will be performing at the North Bay’s Open Air Theatre in June.
At 9am phone lines were blocked as fans tried to get the first of the tickets on offer, priced at £55 and £75.
By 1pm the show had all but sold out, with less then 20 single seats dotted around the £3.5 million venue remaining.
Within a matter of minutes after going on sale tickets appeared on internet auction website eBay, some with a ‘Buy It Now’ price of £500.
Speaking on behalf of Marshall Arts, who are promoting the show, Ben Martin said: “We are delighted with the response and it is fair to say the allocation of tickets went very quickly.
“I would not say it is sold out as there will always be tickets that come back on sale further down the line.
“People will just need to keep their eyes open, and make sure they buy from an official vendor.”
In anticipation of the demand the 6,500-seater Open Air Theatre will be temporarily extended by an extra 2,000 seats, built on decking over the lake.
The lake will be drained and the temporary deck will be in place for around seven days before being dismantled and removed.
The show, on Sunday June 5, will mark Elton John’s first performance in Scarborough, giving fans the rare opportunity to see him live at Europe’s largest open air theatre.
Janet Deacon, North Yorkshire area director at Welcome to Yorkshire, which sponsors the venue, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Elton John, an international music legend, is coming to Scarborough.
“Extra seating for up to 8,000 people has been laid on at the Welcome to Yorkshire Open Air Theatre and we are sure that visitors will make a weekend of it as the concert is held on a Sunday night.
“This is terrific news for tourism in the Scarborough area as we expect restaurants and accommodation will be filled with fans who we are sure will return again for a break once they see what we have to offer.”
The star boasts a career spanning five decades and album sales in excess of 250 million, placing him firmly among some of the world’s biggest entertainers.
He could have chosen to perform at any huge-capacity venue in the country but he has confirmed his booking at Scarborough because he says he wanted to play in a part of the country where people normally have to travel much further afield to see international stars.
His mini-tour also includes places such as Shrewsbury and Hove.
The date at the Open Air Theatre is one of only two solo shows in the UK this year, and is part of just a handful of dates that the 64-year-old singer-songwriter will perform in the UK this summer.
He is also undertaking summer dates with his band across Europe.
His show will include more than two hours of hits from an incredible back catalogue, including such classics as Bennie and The Jets, Crocodile Rock and Your Song.
During his tour of the UK he is also performing at Cardiff International Arena, the SECC in Glasgow, Shrewsbury Town FC, the Isle of Man’s Nobles Park, Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, and Sussex County Cricket Club in Hove.
His concert is the first to be confirmed for the Open Air Theatre’s season.

PS22 Chorus "DANIEL" Elton John
The PS22 Chorus of 2011 sings ever so sweetly on the beautiful Elton John ballad, "Daniel." Congrats to Adham on his solo debut, and what a phenomenal job he did on such a difficult part. Certainly one of the more poignant additions to the PS22 Chorus repertoire....
