Leon Russell has done a lot of music by himself. He's written songs that have been performed by hundreds of singers and bands, guided thousands of small- and large-venue shows from the bench of his piano and had several hits himself.
But he started out as a studio musician and is often heralded as rock music's ultimate session guy. Take, for instance, his piano work on "Monster Mash." (He even made that laboratory sound by blowing into a straw in a glass.) He's played with Willie Nelson and countless others. This time, he's teaming up with a knight.
Sir Elton John and Russell's first single, "If It Wasn't for Bad," will be released on iTunes and other digital retailers on Tuesday. The album that features both piano stars, "The Union," will be released Oct. 19 on Decca Records.
It's not the first time these icons have worked together, but it's been a good long while - since 1970 - since they've paired.
"If It Wasn't for Bad" was written by Leon Russell and features vocals by Elton John and piano and vocals by Russell.
Russell has been talking about this collaboration for some time. He mentioned a possible new album during his 2009 stop in Tulsa for his annual birthday bash, and again at his April 24 stop at the Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino.

Elton John And Leon Russell Collaborations First Listen
by Paul Cashmere - August 24 2010
Songs from the upcoming Leon Russell and Elton John collaboration `The Union` have started hitting the web.
Two tracks, ‘I Should Have Sent Roses’ and and the first single ‘If It Wasn’t For The Bad’ have been released online via the Elton John Corporation.
‘The Union’ was recorded live in the studio and covers multiple music genres like gospel, soul, country, pop and rock. It was produced by T-Bone Burnett.
The album marks a unique collaboration with the two musicians who met when Leon attended Elton’s show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 1970. "In the late '60s and early '70s, the one piano player and vocalist who influenced me more than anybody else was Leon Russell," Elton said in a statement. "He was my idol."
The pair toured together soon after but then lost touch for decades. "Elton called to ask if I would do a duet album with him," Russell said. "I'm very happy that he chose me to do this."
The duelling piano players will perform together on November 3, 2010 at the Hollywood Palladium.
‘The Union’ album will be released on October 19.

Gervais: Elton inspired our film
Tuesday, 24 August 2010
Ricky Gervais has revealed Elton John was the inspiration behind Cemetery Junction, the film he wrote and directed with Stephen Merchant.
The Office and Extras stars co-wrote and directed the coming of age film about two young friends living in Reading in the 70s, which was said to be based on their own experiences as young men deciding what to do with their lives.
But Ricky revealed: "About four years ago, I asked Elton John if I could use his song Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) to open a film with because I've always wanted to start a film with that and he said yes, so I told Stephen Merchant, and he said, 'Right, let's set it in 1973, then'."
But Stephen has an alternative explanation for why they chose to set it in 1973.
He said: "We talked about the idea that the 60s were a very revolutionary time. The late 70s you get punk. There seems to have been that period in the early 70s where things became this wilderness. The hope of the 60s had gone..."
:: Cemetery Junction is out on DVD on August 30.
