Bargain hunters can pick up some of Elton John's designer clothes this weekend by visiting a Brighton charity shop.
The flamboyant singer and his partner David Furnish, have donated a collection of clothes and shoes to Sussex Beacon, a care centre for people with HIV and Aids.
Shoppers can pick up items from Alexander McQueen, Versace and Fendi at "The Closet Comes to Brighton For The Weekend" sale held at the charity's shop in St James Street.
Elton John previously donated the items through his Aids Foundation (EJAF) for Sussex Beacon's fashion show in April, to mark the opening of its Hove store.
Fundraising manager Nick Rose said: "We kept back some of the stock given to us by the EJAF as we wanted to maximise the potential of this incredibly generous gift.
"We currently have to raise over 40% of the income it takes to maintain our current service levels through fundraising. We hope this event will raise some vital funds."
Doors open on August 7, to coincide with Brighton Pride Parade, and the sale will continue until Monday, August 9.
All proceeds will go to the Sussex Beacon, one of only two clinical care centres for people with HIV and Aids in the country.
It has a 10-ten residential unit and runs day care and health management services, as well as monthly women and families services. For more information visit www.sussexbeacon.org.uk.

Red Eye Applauds Elton John for Not Being a Stupid Celebrity Sheep… He’s Against Boycotting AZ for Its Illegal Immigration Law (video)

Quirkier than some others, but still refreshingly funny installment of Red Eye about Elton John dissing those in the entertainment industry who are boycotting Arizona because of its illegal immigration law. Greg Gutfeld and the gang also discuss the entertainer playing at Rush Limbaugh’s recent wedding.
The politically conservative-leaning Red Eye has more viewers on at 3 o’clock in the freakin’ morning (when most people are sleeping) than does CNN during the 8 pm prime time slot.
Note: When this program aired a few days ago and when Elton John made his July 22 declaration in Tucson, Arizona, California’s gay marriage ban had not yet been overturned… but since it may be overturned again, we’ll just go with the flow.

>> GUITARIST JOHN JORGENSON DISCUSSES HIS WORK WITH THE INFLUENTIAL COUNTRY ACT

John Jorgenson puts his jazz on pause for the reunion.

Country's legendary Desert Rose Band will reunite at the Birchmere

Date published: 8/5/2010

BY JONAS BEALS

John Jorgenson remembers meeting a teenage Brad Paisley after a concert years ago. Jorgenson knew Paisley might be a great musician one day--he was the only fan he ever met who seemed genuinely interested in equipment such as amps, pickups, guitars and effects.

Paisley was there to see the Desert Rose Band, who were top-40 regulars in the late 1980s. He was also there to see Jorgenson, one of his guitar heroes.

Paisley later gathered Jorgenson and other guitar greats to record "Cluster Pluck" for his album "Play." The song won a Grammy for best country instrumental.

Nashville is full of hot guitar players, but for many fans--and pickers--Jorgenson is in a class by himself.

He is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist from a family of musicians. He played jazz, but was drawn to country by the emotional peal of a pedal steel guitar.

After diving into country and bluegrass, Jorgenson learned that the standard electric guitar was his forte, and he used it to great effect playing the California country-rock that was popular in his home state. In the mid-'80s he met one of the progenitors of that sound, former Byrds member Chris Hillman, and they decided to start a band.

"The concept was to fuse bluegrass harmonies with the Pretenders--English rock," Jorgenson said.

Eventually, the Desert Rose Band made its way to Nashville. Despite being outsiders, their talent was too much for Music City to deny. Jorgenson was named the Academy of Country Music's guitar player of the year three years in a row.

Jorgenson used his fiery Telecaster guitar, a staple of the earlier Bakersfield sound. He also used Vox amps and 12-string Rickenbacker guitars, sounds common to '60s rock acts like The Byrds.

"I brought a lot of different guitar sounds into country music that weren't there at the time," he said. "I deliberately tried to bring those sounds. Those are now kind of normal parts of commercial country music."

The Desert Rose Band charted eight top-10 country singles and two No. 1 hits: "He's Black and I'm Blue" and "I Still Believe in You." They broke up in 1991.

Jorgenson went on to form the Telecaster supergroup The Hellecasters and has been a longtime member of Elton John's touring band. He also tackles Django Reinhardt-inspired tunes in his John Jorgenson Quintet.
continued
Reinhardt's style of Gypsy-jazz "scratches a lot of my musical itches," Jorgenson said. "I love doing everything--when I don't get to do it, I miss it."

Jorgensen and Hillman missed the Desert Rose Band enough to try to pull it back together. They are in the midst of a short tour with the original lineup, and will play the Birchmere in Alexandria tomorrow and Saturday.

Jorgensen admitted that he wasn't exactly sure why the band decided to get back together now, but he thinks the reunion will be fun.

"Chris and I are kind of the catalysts," he said. "Neither of us would want to do it without the other. Or without any of the original members." Other members include Herb Pedersen, Bill Bryson, Jay Dee Maness and Steve Duncan.

Since the split, each has had his own success as a solo artist, in other bands, or as a first-call session player. Jorgenson said that this reunion could produce even better music than during the band's heyday thanks to a more mature, relaxed attitude on the part of the members.

"It's just more pure now. We don't need for it to work. We don't have to get along," he said.
"I think it's normal--anything has to go away long enough for you to miss it."

So the Desert Rose Band will scratch their collective itch to play again. A quick YouTube search should convince you just how great an event this weekend's concerts could be.
Certainly, Paisley wasn't the only person touched by the band's music.
"I feel totally honored," Jorgenson said of his influence on the current generation of country pickers.

"If I can pass that along a little bit and inspire someone to get into it, then I've achieved something outside of me," he said.

Led Zeppelin's one-off reunion gig at London's O2 Arena three years ago was inspired by a performance by Sir Elton John, it has emerged.

The band were initially uncertain about using the venue, but were won over when they were taken to watch one of Sir Elton's gigs there.

"We were going through (the venue) with the band, and [Jimmy Page] said, 'I bet it doesn't sound any good up there',” David Campbell, president and CEO of AEG Europe – the company responsible for the O2 Arena – said.

“So, with all of them, as well as Harvey and myself, we took the elevator up to Level 4 to go to the very top of the building to have a listen.”

He added: "Someone held the elevator, and we were sort of standing there waiting for them to go. They just put their thumbs up, and sort of smiled at each other.

“That's when Harvey [Goldsmith] and I knew that this was going to be OK. Then, John Paul Jones started running up and down the stairs; and that was it."

Campbell also told Celebrity Access that Led Zeppelin had tried to play down press coverage about their rumoured reunion show.

Calls for another Led Zeppelin reunion have been constant since the band's one-off appearance at the O2 Arena in 2007.
