Moscow police detain gay-rights activists at rally
MOSCOW Amid shouts from gangs of men and threats of beatings, police officers arrested more than a dozen gay rights activists, including a few foreigners, who tried to hold a rally in Moscow on Saturday.Among the arrested were Dan Choi, an U.S. Iraq war veteran and gay rights campaigner, and Andy Thayer, a Chicago-based activist, who were in Moscow to support the rally. They were later released.
"Right ear ringing, small bleeding," Choi wrote in a text message shortly after he was grabbed by several police officers and shoved into a police van. Other activists reported minor injuries from scuffles with the police and other unidentified men.
The Moscow authorities, who rarely tolerate anti-government demonstrations, have vowed never to allow Russia's small community of gay rights activists to hold a rally in the capital, though similar events have been permitted in St. Petersburg, Russia's second largest city.
Last year, the European Court of Human Rights fined Russia more than $40,000 for its refusal to allow gay rights supporters to hold peaceful demonstrations in Moscow. This year's rally was banned, nevertheless.
"The Moscow authorities have once again behaved like cavemen," said Nikolai Alekseyev, organizer of Saturday's rally. He said 18 demonstrators were arrested. Though the foreigners were released, it was unclear how long the Russians would remain in jail.
The protesters attempted to gather amid a scrum of journalists and police officers just outside the walls of the Kremlin. As soon as they unfurled flags and banners, the officers pounced, hustling them into waiting buses.
There were also several groups of men who said they had come to disrupt the rally. Chanting "Down with Sodom," one of the men tore up a photo of Elton John and jumped on it.
"This is a protest against perverts," said Vladislav V. Kuroptev, a member of Union of Orthodox Flag Bearers, a conservative Christian group.

On Monday August 21, 2006 Jake Shears, the lead singer of the band
Scissors Sisters interviewed Sir Elton John at Elton’s home in the south
of France. The interview was recently published in Britain’s The
Observer Music Monthly magazine. Here is a part of what Elton John had
to say about world peace, politics, religion and being gay:
Jake Shears:…”I look around this summer and the past couple of years
and it seems to me that world politics have really changed the gay
movement. We’re on the verge of world war and there are such horrible
things happening with religious clashes.”
Elton John: “I think religion has always tried to turn hatred towards
gay people. Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays…in
[former Soviet Bloc] countries such as Poland, Latvia and Russia there
is a huge anti-gay movement and a lot of it is started by the church…I
cannot stand any kind of racism or religious hatred; there’s so much
negativity with people. They used to put gay people in a cupboard but
now they’re doing it to [certain] religious people. What we should be
doing as musicians is trying to bring people together… We can’t keep
thinking of gay people as being ostracised; we can’t keep thinking of
Muslim people as being [ostracised] because of the fundamentalism that
occurs in Islam. Muslim people have to do something about speaking up
about it…From my point of view I would ban religion completely, even
though there are some wonderful things about it. I love the idea of the
teachings of Jesus Christ and the beautiful stories about it, which I
loved in Sunday school and I collected all the little stickers and put
them in my book. But the reality is that organised religion doesn’t seem
to work. It turns people into hateful lemmings and it’s not really
compassionate…The world is near escalating to World War Three and where
are the leaders of each religion? Why aren’t they having a conclave; why
aren’t they coming together? I said this after 9/11 and people thought I
was nuts: instead of more violence why isn’t there a [meeting of
religious leaders]. It’s all got to be dialogue – that’s the only way.
Get everybody from each religion together and say ‘Listen, this can’t go
on. Why do we have all this hatred?’…We are all God’s people; we have
to get along and the [religious leaders] have to lead the way. If they
don’t do it, who else is going to do it? They’re not going to do it and
it’s left to musicians or to someone else to deal with it. It’s like the
peace movement in the Sixties – musicians got through [to people] by
getting out there and doing peace concerts but we don’t seem to do them
any more. We seem to be doing fundraisers for Africa and everything like
that but I think peace is really important. If John Lennon were alive
today he’d be leading it with a vengeance…I am totally against the war
but violence is part of mankind and it’s going to happen, but as
musicians I think we’ve got to step up and say ‘come on’…People don’t
seem to protest in the streets any more, they are always blogging on the
internet. They seem to do their protesting online, and that’s not good
[enough]. You have got to get out there and be seen and be vocal, and
you’ve got to do it time and time again. People have become apathetic.
There was a big march in London when Britain decided to join the war
against Iraq and Tony Blair is on record as saying ‘The people who march
today will have blood on their hands.’ That’s returned to bite him in
the ass…We cannot solve everybody’s problems in the West. What we’ve
done [in Iraq] has sped up an inevitable civil war after Saddam Hussein
left power. I don’t know the solution. I just know that all we can do as
musicians – whether gay or straight – is to come together and promote
peace. We have been promoting [anti-poverty] but when you do a concert
sometimes they forget about their emotions: that’s the power of music
and sport – they are the two things that can do that…Dave (Furnish) and I
as a couple seem to be the acceptable face of gayness, and that’s
great. I’ve got to use that power to try and do what I can – or we have –
to try to make the situations in Russia and Poland [better]. I’m off to
Poland in two weeks to say something there because the situation is not
good. If I’m on the board of Amnesty International I can’t just sit
back and say nothing. It’s not a gay issue; it’s a human rights issue.
I’m going to fight for them, whether I do it silently behind the scenes
or vocally so that I get locked up. I can’t just sit back; it’s not in
my nature any more. I’m nearly 60 years old, after all. I can’t sit back
and blindly ignore it, and I won’t.”

34 personnes ont été interpellées à Moscou après des violences entre activistes gay et fondamentalistes orthodoxes.
La police russe a interpellé 33 personnes lors d'une marche interdite pour les droit des homosexuels à Moscou le 28 mai 2011. (Sipa) Trois militants occidentaux et plus de 30 Russes ont été interpellés samedi 28 mai à Moscou, au cours d'une marche homosexuelle interdite à deux pas du Kremlin. la marche a été attaquée par des fondamentalistes orthodoxes et violemment dispersée par la police.
Les violences ont éclaté place du Manège où un groupe d'ultra-orthodoxes brandissant des croix et des icônes attendaient les manifestants qui voulaient déposer une gerbe à la tombe du soldat inconnu - en hommage à la victoire soviétique contre le régime nazi dont les homosexuels furent aussi les victimes.
Dès que les militants gay s'approchaient du lieu préalablement bouclé par la police, ils se faisaient attaquer.
Ils étaient ensuite plaqués au sol, ainsi que leurs assaillants, et conduits vers des camionnettes devant des touristes étrangers abasourdis se promenant sur la place Rouge par ce samedi ensoleillé.
Interpellations "très grossières"
Les manifestants scandaient "La Russie sans homophobie!", tenant des pancartes sur lesquelles on pouvait lire "La Russie n'est pas l'Iran!"
Trente-quatre personnes ont été interpellées dont la majorité a été relâchée en fin d'après-midi.
Parmi elles figuraient deux militants américains, Dan Choi, de l'association contre l'interdiction faite aux homosexuels de servir dans l'armée, et Andy Thayer, du "Gay liberation Network", ainsi que le Français Louis-George Tin qui préside le comité Idaho contre l'homophobie.
"Ils nous ont interpellés de manière très grossière", a déclaré Louis-George Tin, ajoutant qu'il avait été insulté en anglais par des policiers russes.
Des affrontements très violents
Elena Kostioutchenko, journaliste du journal d'opposition Novaïa Gazeta, qui a manifesté pour la reconnaissance des droits civils des lesbiennes, a raconté sur la radio Echo de Moscou qu'elle avait été hospitalisée après avoir été frappée sur la tempe par un orthodoxe.
Le militant britannique Peter Tatchell, pionnier des défilés en faveur de l'égalité des droits pour les homosexuels, a salué le courage des homosexuels russes qui "se sont rassemblés près du Kremlin sachant qu'ils avaient de fortes chances d'être arrêtés et battus par les néo-nazis".
Des fondamentalistes orthodoxes ont expliqué qu'ils devaient empêcher la gay-pride.
"Dieu a brûlé Sodome et Gomorrhe, et il brûlera aussi Moscou si nous laissons ça se produire", a dit l'un d'eux, Léonid Simonovitch-Nikchitch, évoquant un passage de la Bible utilisé pour tenter de justifier la répression de l'homosexualité.
Il a ensuite déchiré et piétiné une photo du chanteur britannique Elton John, lui-même homosexuel et qui fait figure d'icône dans le mouvement.
La Russie "fait preuve de sauvagerie"
Depuis leur première demande en 2006, les homosexuels russes n'ont jamais obtenu le droit de manifester à Moscou et toutes leurs tentatives ont été dispersées sans ménagement par la police, sous l'impulsion de l'ex-maire de Moscou, Iouri Loujkov, un habitué des propos homophobes.
Iouri Loujkov a été remplacé fin 2010 par Sergueï Sobianine, un proche collaborateur du Premier ministre Vladimir Poutine.
"La répression de samedi met une croix sur la réputation internationale du maire Sobianine. La Russie a une nouvelle fois fait preuve d'une sauvagerie digne de l'âge des cavernes", a déclaré le chef de GayRussia, Nikolaï Alexeïev, qui avait décidé de ne pas participer à la manifestation.
Une atteinte au droit de réunion
Lioudmila Alexeïeva, présidente du groupe Helsinki, a noté que la dispersion d'une manifestation "pacifique" était "le signe d'un Etat non-civilisé et non-démocratique".
Les homosexuels russes refusent de se plier à l'interdiction de défiler, qui reflète selon eux "l'idéologie homophobe, nationaliste et cléricale" du pouvoir russe, très proche de l'Eglise orthodoxe.
Ils en appelaient au récent arrêt de la Cour européenne des droits de l'Homme (CEDH) contre la Russie, disant qu'interdire de telles manifestations constitue une discrimination et une atteinte au droit de réunion.

Die Teilnehmer der Parade schwenkten Regenbogenfahnen und trugen Schilder mit Aufschriften wie "Russland ist nicht Iran". Nahe des Kremls wollten sie einen Kranz auf dem Grab des Unbekannten Soldaten niederlegen; die Polizei hatte die Gegend jedoch bereits im Vorfeld abgeriegelt. Als sie sich der Stätte näherten, griffen orthodoxe Fundamentalisten die Demonstranten an, wie die AFP-Korrespondentin berichtete. Daraufhin schritt die Polizei ein und trennte beide Parteien gewaltsam. Ein Polizeisprecher sagte im Radio, dass 34 Aktivisten festgenommen worden seien. Die meisten von ihnen wurden am Abend nach Angaben der Organisatoren wieder freigelassen.
Die Anhänger der religiösen Gruppe trugen schwarze Kleidung und hielten christlich-orthodoxe Kreuze hoch. Einer von ihnen zerriss ein Bild des britischen Popstars und bekennenden Homosexuellen Elton John. Unter den Teilnehmern der Schwulenparade waren überwiegend junge Leute, die unter anderem "Russland ohne Homophobie" riefen. "Wovor wir wirklich Angst haben, sind die Homophoben und Neonazis, die angekündigt haben, herzukommen und uns zusammenzuschlagen", sagte ein Aktivist der Nachrichtenagentur AFP. "Anstatt diejenigen festzunehmen, die Unruhe stiften, will die Polizei uns festnehmen."
Der französische Schwulenrechtler Louis-George Tin sagte AFP telefonisch, dass er gemeinsam mit fünf Russen und zwei US-Bürgern festgenommen worden sei. Der britische Schwulenaktivist Peter Tabe sich befreien können, als die Polizei versucht habe, ihn festzunehmen. Zugleich erklärte er, vor dem Sitz des Bürgermeisters Polizeibusse gesehen zu haben, in denen Menschen saßen, "die aussahen wie Skinheads und Neonazis". Es sei davon auszugehen, dass ein Großteil der ebenfalls aufgetauchten Neonazis in Wirklichkeit verdeckte Polizisten waren.
Schwulenparaden sind in der russischen Hauptstadt verboten. Bei einem ersten Versuch von Aktivisten im Jahr 2006, trotz des Verbots eine Parade zu organisieren, waren etwa 120 von ihnen festgenommen worden. Die Moskauer Stadtverwaltung kündigte auch diesmal im Vorfeld an, keine Nachsicht mit Aktivisten zu zeigen, die vor dem Kreml protestierten. Menschenrechtler werfen der Moskauer Polizei immer wieder vor, nachsichtiger mit nationalistischen Gruppen umzugehen als mit Demonstranten für die Rechte von Minderheiten.

Elton John, accompagné par Ray Cooper, a régalé le public d'un répertoire de plus de 40 ans. On était averti. Entre son jet privé et l'escorte policière, Elton John n'allait offrir que quelques heures de son temps monarchique à Strasbourg, hier. Pas forcément assez pour les 4 800 spectateurs qui auraient volontiers prolongé une soirée mémorielle. Cela fonctionne ainsi, comme une madeleine proustienne imbibée de gros sucre. Depuis quarante ans qu'Elton John s'évertue à donner une succession ...
