The pair have a history of spats.

Thu, 23 Jun 2011 9:48p.m. Sir Elton John has thanked his pal George Michael after the singer announced he is handing over the proceeds from one of his upcoming tour dates to the 'Rocket Man''s AIDS charity.
The 'Faith' hitmaker is heading back out on the road for a series of European orchestral concerts, and last month he revealed he will be dedicating a show to late actress Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who was an active campaigner for AIDS charities.
Michael has now confirmed his gig at London's Royal Opera House in November will raise funds for Sir Elton's latest charity venture - a fund set up in Taylor's name following her death in March.
The veteran star created the Elizabeth Taylor Memorial Fund as part of his Elton John AIDS Foundation in honour of the Cleopatra star and Michael is handing over all money raised from the gig to his pal's initiative.
Sir Elton has now thanked Michael for the gesture: "George has been a patron of the Foundation since its inception and has been a much valued supporter over the years, as well as a dear friend.
"This is an incredible and generous gesture. I thank George from my heart for doing this. His is an amazing talent, and this is a fantastic gift he is making to people affected by HIV."
Michael adds, "I have seen how HIV can affect people's lives, how it can destroy families and communities.
"The way that the Elton John Aids Foundation gets help to the people around the world who need it most - often the most marginalised communities - really spurred me on to do something. I wanted to honour the inspiring efforts that Elizabeth Taylor made - especially in the early years of the epidemic."

It had become one of the most acrimonious and public feuds in showbusiness.
Pop superstars George Michael and Sir Elton John, who had been extremely close in the 1980s, saw their friendship collapse as Michael’s marijuana addiction intensified – and he ignored Sir Elton’s offers of help.
At one stage, the feud became so heated Michael even told Sir Elton to ‘shut his mouth and get on with his own life.’
However, now the Daily Mail has learned that Michael – having now quit the drugs following his prison stint and rehab last year – has been reconciled with Sir Elton. And the Mail has been told they have begun seeing each other socially once more.
A friend said: ‘They have been seeing each other quite a lot. The feud is finally over. George and Elton are getting on brilliantly again and everybody is thrilled.’
Their renewed friendship was this morning [thurs] confirmed when Michael – who turns 48 on Saturday - announced he will be playing a charity concert in London this November, in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Confirming the reconciliation Sir Elton, 64, labelled Michael ‘a dear friend’ as he thanked him for his generosity.

The pair became close in the 1980s and famously sang Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me together at Live Aid in 1985. It was then a No1 for the pair in 1991 when it was released in aid of charity.
However, their relationship deteriorated following Michael’s descent into drug addiction.
The fall-out became public in 2004 when Sir Elton said Michael appeared to be in a ‘strange place,’ smoked too much marijuana, there was a ‘deep-rooted unhappiness in his life’ and branded his album Patience ‘disappointing’.
An enraged Michael fired off a tirade to a magazine saying: ‘Elton John knows very little about George Michael and that's a fact. Most of what Elton knows about my life is limited to the gossip he hears on the gay grapevine.’
He added, for good measure, that Sir Elton relied on his old hits to make millions, while George said that his ‘passion and drive is still about the future.’
When Elton tried to patch things up that Christmas, Michael snubbed him, refusing to take his calls on five occasions
In 2006, Michael told TV chat show Michael Parkinson that harsh media treatment of his personal life started when John made adverse comments about his state of mind.
He said: ‘The trajectory of my particular soap opera (with the press) launched from that statement Elton made about 18 months ago when Elton hadn't seen me for years.’
He then told Sir Elton to ‘shut his mouth’ in 2009.
Michael told a newspaper interviewer: ‘He [Sir Elt] will not be happy until I bang on his door in the middle of the night saying, 'Please, please, help me, Elton. Take me to rehab.' It's not going to happen….Elton just needs to shut his mouth and get on with his own life.’
Earlier this year, Michael even compared Sir Elton to the Nan character in comedienne Catherine Tate’s popular series.
Michael said: ‘We all earn the right to get a little more grumpy as we get older - but he's getting terribly close to Nan territory, you know the Nan from Catherine Tate.’
The former Wham! star underwent rehab last summer following his arrest for drug driving. At the time, he admitted: ‘Personal problems which I had tried to deal with myself had clearly got the better of me, and I am sorry that my pride has prevented me from seeking help before now.’
He eventually served half of an eight-week sentence for crashing his car whilst under the influence of cannabis. After leaving prison, he announced he just wanted ‘to start again.’

I've been on a several year search for Elton John tracks, inspired by the member of the old ICE board that put together a 4-disc (later updated to 6!) collection of Elton rarities and b-sides. Right now I'm working on collecting 12" remixes. I don't do vinyl anymore so for the remixes that pre-date cd, I have been resorting to YouTube, but of course there are still gaps.
Currently I'm looking for digital copies of "Crystal (Extended Remix)" and "Believe (Urban Turban Mix)"? Crystal was on vinyl. Believe was a promo only cd single.
And as long as I'm on the topic, does anybody have an extra copy of the Bunbury Tails cd they want to sell?
Thanks for any assistance. And of course, if anyone wants to start discussing Elton John minutiae, count me in.

Elton recorded a song for Baz Luhrmann's movie Australia titled "The Drover's Ballad" but there was no physical release of the soundtrack.
He also contributed two news songs to the animated feature Gnomeo and Juliet. They're both on the soundtrack CD, but the movie version of "Hello, Hello" was a duet with Lady Gaga, while the album version is Elton solo.

Another soundtrack oddity that Elton is on is the charity song in the movie Bruno.
Do you think he knows there are obsessives like me out here, buying movies just to rip the audio?

Just curious about how you felt the first time you may have seen "Dog Day Afternoon" with "Amoreena" playing?
I was about 15 when the film came out and I remember saying to my sister "That's Elton", but I had never heard the song before that day.

I only saw Dog Day Afternoon recently, the last 5 years or so. When Amoreena came on I was mostly confused. What is this song doing here? This wasn't a hit. Hmmm.... Then after a few minutes, the delayed reaction.
I turned to my boyfriend:
"Hey! This is Elton!"
"Yes. I know."
"Oh... You know this song?"
"I bought this album when it came out."
"Oh..." I was so disappointed that my superior knowledge of music didn't amaze him.
He's just enough older that he was a teenager at the time. I was only 7 in 1972 and not buying my own records yet.
It was pretty funny at the time.

"I didn't start out to become famous, so when it disappeared I thought, well, that happens sometimes," Russell told Reuters in an interview in New York where he was inducted last week into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. "It does happen."
Wearing dark sunglasses with a long gray beard and hair, the musician known for his gravelly voice and blues-influenced piano playing admitted his distaste of the media was no help.
"I was avoiding the press, I really didn't like doing (interviews), so that more than anything is what it was," he said. "I didn't like to talk to people who didn't really know me and didn't care about me."
A session musician who throughout the 1960s played on countless records made by everyone from Frank Sinatra to The Beach Boys, Russell is best known as Joe Cocker's bandleader and won critical acclaim and commercial success for his early 1970s solo records.
"I have never been off stage for the past 50 years," said Russell, known for writing such rock classics as "Delta Lady" and "A Song For You."
At the height of his fame in the 1970s, Russell filled arenas. As his fame waned, he played small nightclubs.
"I was used to playing in front of 20,000 and then with only 300 seats, the audience was right up in my face," he said. "That took a bit of getting used to. It was different to what I was used to, but they all have their charms."
"HAPPY WITH WHAT COMES"
That all changed when Elton John called unexpectedly to invite him to record an album. The resulting album "The Union" was released in 2010 and has revived Russell's career. The album peaked at No. 3 on U.S. album charts, his first hit since his 1979 album "One for the Road" with Willie Nelson.
"It's a wonderful thing, it's all up to Elton," said Russell of the accolades which followed, including induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. "I am very thankful."
A documentary of the recording of the album, directed by Cameron Crowe, will show on HBO in January.
Now, the 69-year old who has played live since he was 14 is back touring in larger venues, including many shows this summer with Bob Dylan. And he says he plans a solo album although, "I can't tell what the album is going to be like because I only have one song."
Indeed, Russell isn't one for talking about plans. "I am going to make millions of dollars and have a castle and ride into space," he said sarcastically. "I am happy with what comes, I don't have expectations of any stature."
But ask him about the musicians he has known and he lights up.
"I would have to say Sam Cooke is the one I admired most," he said when asked who was the best he ever played with. "His artistry and vocal, just the way he did it. I had never heard anybody sing like he sang and still haven't."
That's no small compliment since the list of Russell's recording appearances reads like a who's who of rock royalty.
Among others, he contributed to the records of Jerry Lee Lewis, George Harrison, Doris Day, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, Eric Clapton, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Herb Alpert, Sinatra, Dylan, Cocker, The Rolling Stones and was also in Phil Spector's studio group.
Russell recalled his first recording session with Joe Cocker, asking after the session if the Englishman cared to hear some songs Russell had written for him, among them "Delta Lady" which became one of his signature songs.
"I played them for him and Joe had this astonished look on his face. He said, 'So you're sitting there quietly playing for this whole time and now you do this? It's an entirely different thing,'" he said, recalling telling Cocker, "Well it is -- when you are playing for somebody, you keep your mouth shut and you do what you are told. Performing, that's a different thing."
And just like he's not one for talking about plans, Russell doesn't much like talking about any regrets either.
"I wish I had gone into industrial plumbing," he said, adding just in case his meaning was missed, "That's a joke."

The European tour features the English singer/songwriter performing tracks from across his nearly 30-year career in addition to some of his favorite tunes from other artists. The songs will be re-worked and re-arranged for the orchestra backing him.
“Symphonica: The Orchestral Tour” begins in Czech Republic at Prague’s State Opera House Aug. 22. Dates are booked through a series of December gigs at London’s Earls Court in addition to an April 2012 show in Paris.
The Nov. 6 show at London’s Royal Opera House will benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s new Elizabeth Taylor Memorial Fund, which will further the foundation’s mission of helping people infected or affected by HIV. All net proceeds from the black-tie charity event will be used to create and manage the fund in Taylor’s memory.

The pair became close in the 1980s and famously sang Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me together at Live Aid in 1985. It was then a No1 for the pair in 1991 when it was released in aid of charity.
However, their relationship deteriorated following Michael’s descent into drug addiction.

An enraged Michael fired off a tirade to a magazine saying: ‘Elton John knows very little about George Michael and that's a fact. Most of what Elton knows about my life is limited to the gossip he hears on the gay grapevine.’
He added, for good measure, that Sir Elton relied on his old hits to make millions, while George said that his ‘passion and drive is still about the future.’
When Elton tried to patch things up that Christmas, Michael snubbed him, refusing to take his calls on five occasions
In 2006, Michael told TV chat show Michael Parkinson that harsh media treatment of his personal life started when John made adverse comments about his state of mind.

He then told Sir Elton to ‘shut his mouth’ in 2009.
Michael told a newspaper interviewer: ‘He [Sir Elt] will not be happy until I bang on his door in the middle of the night saying, 'Please, please, help me, Elton. Take me to rehab.' It's not going to happen….Elton just needs to shut his mouth and get on with his own life.’
Earlier this year, Michael even compared Sir Elton to the Nan character in comedienne Catherine Tate’s popular series.
Michael said: ‘We all earn the right to get a little more grumpy as we get older - but he's getting terribly close to Nan territory, you know the Nan from Catherine Tate.’
The former Wham! star underwent rehab last summer following his arrest for drug driving. At the time, he admitted: ‘Personal problems which I had tried to deal with myself had clearly got the better of me, and I am sorry that my pride has prevented me from seeking help before now.’
He eventually served half of an eight-week sentence for crashing his car whilst under the influence of cannabis. After leaving prison, he announced he just wanted ‘to start again.’

I've been on a several year search for Elton John tracks, inspired by the member of the old ICE board that put together a 4-disc (later updated to 6!) collection of Elton rarities and b-sides. Right now I'm working on collecting 12" remixes. I don't do vinyl anymore so for the remixes that pre-date cd, I have been resorting to YouTube, but of course there are still gaps.
Currently I'm looking for digital copies of "Crystal (Extended Remix)" and "Believe (Urban Turban Mix)"? Crystal was on vinyl. Believe was a promo only cd single.
And as long as I'm on the topic, does anybody have an extra copy of the Bunbury Tails cd they want to sell?
Thanks for any assistance. And of course, if anyone wants to start discussing Elton John minutiae, count me in.

Elton recorded a song for Baz Luhrmann's movie Australia titled "The Drover's Ballad" but there was no physical release of the soundtrack.
He also contributed two news songs to the animated feature Gnomeo and Juliet. They're both on the soundtrack CD, but the movie version of "Hello, Hello" was a duet with Lady Gaga, while the album version is Elton solo.

Another soundtrack oddity that Elton is on is the charity song in the movie Bruno.
Do you think he knows there are obsessives like me out here, buying movies just to rip the audio?

Just curious about how you felt the first time you may have seen "Dog Day Afternoon" with "Amoreena" playing?
I was about 15 when the film came out and I remember saying to my sister "That's Elton", but I had never heard the song before that day.

I only saw Dog Day Afternoon recently, the last 5 years or so. When Amoreena came on I was mostly confused. What is this song doing here? This wasn't a hit. Hmmm.... Then after a few minutes, the delayed reaction.
I turned to my boyfriend:
"Hey! This is Elton!"
"Yes. I know."
"Oh... You know this song?"
"I bought this album when it came out."
"Oh..." I was so disappointed that my superior knowledge of music didn't amaze him.
He's just enough older that he was a teenager at the time. I was only 7 in 1972 and not buying my own records yet.
It was pretty funny at the time.

If enacted, this proposal would eliminate access to life-saving medicine for thousands of low-income, HIV-positive Floridians.EJAF Founder Sir Elton John and Chairman David Furnish have sent a letter to Florida Governor Rick Scott, urging him to immediately intervene. To date, Governor Scott has not responded to Elton and David's letter.

No Regrets for Resurgent Musician Leon Russell

"I didn't start out to become famous, so when it disappeared I thought, well, that happens sometimes," Russell told Reuters in an interview in New York where he was inducted last week into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. "It does happen."
Wearing dark sunglasses with a long gray beard and hair, the musician known for his gravelly voice and blues-influenced piano playing admitted his distaste of the media was no help.
"I was avoiding the press, I really didn't like doing (interviews), so that more than anything is what it was," he said. "I didn't like to talk to people who didn't really know me and didn't care about me."
A session musician who throughout the 1960s played on countless records made by everyone from Frank Sinatra to The Beach Boys, Russell is best known as Joe Cocker's bandleader and won critical acclaim and commercial success for his early 1970s solo records.
"I have never been off stage for the past 50 years," said Russell, known for writing such rock classics as "Delta Lady" and "A Song For You."
At the height of his fame in the 1970s, Russell filled arenas. As his fame waned, he played small nightclubs.
"I was used to playing in front of 20,000 and then with only 300 seats, the audience was right up in my face," he said. "That took a bit of getting used to. It was different to what I was used to, but they all have their charms."
"HAPPY WITH WHAT COMES"
That all changed when Elton John called unexpectedly to invite him to record an album. The resulting album "The Union" was released in 2010 and has revived Russell's career. The album peaked at No. 3 on U.S. album charts, his first hit since his 1979 album "One for the Road" with Willie Nelson.
"It's a wonderful thing, it's all up to Elton," said Russell of the accolades which followed, including induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. "I am very thankful."
A documentary of the recording of the album, directed by Cameron Crowe, will show on HBO in January.
Now, the 69-year old who has played live since he was 14 is back touring in larger venues, including many shows this summer with Bob Dylan. And he says he plans a solo album although, "I can't tell what the album is going to be like because I only have one song."
Indeed, Russell isn't one for talking about plans. "I am going to make millions of dollars and have a castle and ride into space," he said sarcastically. "I am happy with what comes, I don't have expectations of any stature."
But ask him about the musicians he has known and he lights up.
"I would have to say Sam Cooke is the one I admired most," he said when asked who was the best he ever played with. "His artistry and vocal, just the way he did it. I had never heard anybody sing like he sang and still haven't."
That's no small compliment since the list of Russell's recording appearances reads like a who's who of rock royalty.
Among others, he contributed to the records of Jerry Lee Lewis, George Harrison, Doris Day, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, Eric Clapton, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Herb Alpert, Sinatra, Dylan, Cocker, The Rolling Stones and was also in Phil Spector's studio group.
Russell recalled his first recording session with Joe Cocker, asking after the session if the Englishman cared to hear some songs Russell had written for him, among them "Delta Lady" which became one of his signature songs.
"I played them for him and Joe had this astonished look on his face. He said, 'So you're sitting there quietly playing for this whole time and now you do this? It's an entirely different thing,'" he said, recalling telling Cocker, "Well it is -- when you are playing for somebody, you keep your mouth shut and you do what you are told. Performing, that's a different thing."
And just like he's not one for talking about plans, Russell doesn't much like talking about any regrets either.
"I wish I had gone into industrial plumbing," he said, adding just in case his meaning was missed, "That's a joke."

However:

Someone (not a regular PRFer) PM'd me on this forum asking about my experience with them, I responded with a frank and, to be fair, strongly worded list of faults, QC and design issues. This chap saw fit to repost my PM on another forum. Yada yada, PMI Audio (who distribute Toft and a wide selection of other Chinese cheapo tat) threatened my then-employers with legal action, which was fully ridiculous as all I had done was state some facts and offer some opinions based on experience, privately, to another individual. Dickheads of the highest order, I would definitely avoid any dealings with Toft or PMI Audio. You'll notice that most of my posts regarding the company are now edited. I didn't remove any of the information about how shitty I think their product is, but it did seem worth taking out info that could be easily used to identify me, since my allocated time for dealing with threatening emails from utter pricks is limited at best.

by MrWarandieBoy on Tue Jun 21, 2011 6:59 pm the toft ATBs have a bad rep on this board, and a middling rep pretty much everywhere else. the first revision did indeed have a bunch of QC problems - i have one of these myself, and it arrived with a faulty cap in the right channel of the master section (resulting in a huge amount of hiss in that channel), plus a few stiff pots (which seem to have fixed themselves up over the past three years, i went looking for them the other day and couldn't find any). they've since upgraded many of the components, eg: they now have balanced DOs (mine has unbalanced, which i've never found to be a problem), upgraded faders (again, i've never found mine to be an issue) and multi-coloured mute/solo LEDs (mine only has individual mute LEDs and a global solo LED, which makes finding which channel you have soloed a bit of a pain). of course, i got my ATB16 for about $3.5k while i think theyre about $5k now.
so yeah, there are definite issues with the early toft desks, and arguably some of those issues still exist. that said, i've been happy with mine for the past few years. i'm looking to upgrade to a bigger, more professional desk now, but that's mostly because my needs and circumstances have changed. if i'd bought a 24 or 32 channel to begin with i'd probably be less concerned about getting a new desk for another few years.
the good parts of the desk are that they have quality EQ, and they're quite flexible with routing etc considering their price range. the desks are somewhat modular, so their components can be upgraded if you're handy with a soldering iron. there's a really good thread over at gearslutz where jim williams goes into detail with what components can and should be upgraded to improve the desk. he also sells little 'plug-in preamps' for $50 per channel that supposedly make a significant difference to the quality of the mic/line preamp. i haven't tried any yet but i'm planning to get a couple to see how big the difference actually is, since the price is pretty low.
so, overall they're decent desks. not great, but decent. they're also relatively cheap for a new desk. they fill a certain need in the market. that said, you could almost certainly find a second hand desk for the same price that would be as good if not better than the ATB (eg: a decent trident or similar). since you're in america there are HEAPS of options for you in the second hand market. out here in australia things are a lot more limited as far as mid-range consoles are concerned, which makes it very difficult to figure out what's good value and what's a ripoff (see: the thread i made recently about whether a particular soundcraft ghost desk was worth considering).
